: Which tires?

Alright, I'm not going to win my auction for the Boggers, so I'm buying tires from Daniel. They're surplus Humvee tires.

Question is which would you go with? I haven't found much info regarding either on the web.

Here's the choices:

Bias:

Radial:

I'm leaning towards the bias tires and begging/borrowing/stealing a tire groover...

im going with the radials on mine because i have to drive it every day. your idea with the groover sounds cool though and thats what i almost did.

Yeah, let me add this is NOT a daily driver. It will be driven around town, but only occassionally and to the trails.

i ran a set of the bias ply and they lasted about 20k on a 8k lbs truck. but they were a pretty decent tire, the compond seemed soft and griped well.

actually im thinking of running the biases now that i pseudo grooved mine in PS. this is the grooving pattern i like best. notice how on the outer lugs i didnt run them all the way to the outside of the tire to help elinimate chunking.

$50! What sizes does he have? I need some 16.5" around 37" or 38" tall. Daniel are you out there? I need some!

youre in luck! he has radials in 37x12.5R16.5 (the tires you see on hummer all the time now) for $50... just dont buy 100 of them, cause thats all hes got and i need to order a set!

Heres the deal if you want them cut I can do it for you and i want $10 a tire because you are the first to have hummers cut... Just let me know what you want...

I'll call you tomorrow...

Probably going to go with the bias tires with a bit of cutting... I just see the three inner strips as having no bite.

Off to photochop.

To the people who have used the bias ply, how well did they work off road, especially in the mud and on muddy rocks? What size are these tires (actual width and heigth)? I could definitly use a set of cheap tires for my next project.

Watchyall think of grooving them like this?

Basically removing the S shape in the two inner contact areas to make them actual lugs.

What a retarded tread pattern. That won't improve off road performance.

Mo how about something like this, cut on either side of the middle of the S shaped thing. That would give you a combination of smaller and larger lugs. Also cut the centre rib straight across at equal distance(say 1.5 inch intervals) all the way around. Here's a very rough picture.

Just wondering, are they all 16.5" rim size?

Get the radials. i had some of the Wrangler II's and they sucked in the mud, loud (louder than my TSL's are now! i don't know ow, they just are), wore funny and were a beiotch to balance:nuke:. I sold them to a friend that just needed to have something to wheel around his chasis. The MT/R's are some of the best tires out there and if they made them in a 40" i would problaby sell a kindey to a rouge ex-Soviet scientist to afford them. but what do i know :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Get the radials.

I drove HMMWV's in the Army for 6 years. The bias ones sucked, they wore funny, didn't work in the mud at all (it was Panama, can't tell you if they work on rocks), wobbled, etc...

I was so happy when we got the radials in to replace them that I went down to the motorpool to change them on a day off!

BWAHAHAHAHA! ain't that the truth! My 39.5 TSL that don't balance ride better than my Wrangler II's did!

that looks a lot like the simex pattern used in the jungles of malaysia, and starting to be mroe common here in oz

Alrighty..... talked to daniel and went with the bias tires. Might not ride as well, but this is pretty much a trail only vehicle, so I'm not too concerned (at least not right now) with the ride. I think I can get more bite out of those tires by grooving out those center three strips.

They're gonna be cut like Paul drew. Thanks for the idea paul.

And I've heard nothing but good about the Simex tires... got a website? love to see more about them.

Now I've just gotta get everything put together.
