: grease gun problems

my grease gun is throwing me a fit (40 dollar from autozone, less than a year old and barely used). sometimes it seems like there's air in the system, and the trigger (push/pull) does absolutely nothing. this seemed to start when i ditched my old crappy autozone special grease and went with the green stuff (from Budd).

anyone got any possible input? i'm a grease gun noob pretty much and have tried everything.

usually i could disconnect the hose, pump it a few times, and it would start coming out again, but this time it just seems dead.. plenty of greae in there though.

help? thank you!

You're talking about a plain old pump-handle type gun right? It sounds like there's air in it. They can be a real aggravating PITA sometimes. There should be a little plug that you can unscrew to purge the air out of it (at least mine has one). It's fun too because when you remove the plug, sometimes it will shit grease all over your hand and the gun until it hits the air pocket, then it will sneeze the air out and blow/splatter grease all over your face. Then you've got to try to get the plug threaded back into the hole under the pressure of the grease trying to squeeze out. Good times. About then is when your mature vocabulary really comes in handy. 100 to one says that's all that's wrong with it. You just gotta get it purged. Sometimes they can be real finicky. Have fun!

yep, plain old pump type.

the kicker is, i used that purge screw for a while today. i had to get the grease out somehow, so i just kept unscrewing it, letting abunch come out, then closing it and taking the grease..

is there another way to purge the air out of it?

unscrew the top a little to allow the air out, only a little though. Make sure that the handle is taking full strokes, sometimes they don't come all the way back. I don't know why, but mine is like that. If it doesn't take a full stroke, it acts like there is air in it.

You can try to remove the hose (or just the fitting at the end of the hose) and pump a few times. This will get the air out of the pump mechanism.

guys, thanks, but i wrote in both posts that i already HAVE unscrewed the hose and the screw. nothing. grease keeps coming out, but gun still won't work. doing full pumps as well, but nada. :( i let several ounces probably come out through the screw hole, and that didn't help much this time..

pull the plunger and take it apart, take out the grease tube and then put it back in, put it back together. if it don't work then.....take it back and get another one:flipoff2:

Surprised no one mentioned this...pull the plunger rod out until it contacts the rear plunger. Twist the rod until you find the sweet spot that will allow you to put more pressure on the plunger than just the spring will. Add pressure and pump a few times to get the air out. Works every time with my grease gun.
