: Racing T'All???

After talking with Tom M (dangerous) and thinking (lunatical), I've been bitten by the bug to race a Travel-all. I'd set it up for baja style races, but keep it within M4x4RA rules.

Master Plan:

74-75 2wd T'all, 345/392/maybe 401, 2wd Scout close T-19, FF60 rear, 3/4 ton springs rear. BEEFED IFS front, caged and skinned, top cut for that "Avalanche" look :barf: Fuel cell in the bed. To keep inside M4x4RA rules, weld attachments for D20 and Ford TTB D44 on the cage, bolt 'em down.

Reasons for the plan:
No 1: IFS good for my driving style.
No 2: extra width and length for stability, w/o loosing much turning radius.
No 3: In a distance baja race, how often do you shift?? i've never heard of a t-19 dying from overheating.
No 4: Lose the wieght of the top, and fawk with the q-tip crowd.
No 5: The rules only state that they must be present, not operable.

Talking with me is ALWAYS dangerous. :D

That's only really applicable for the drags, and maybe obstacle races in a few places, but drags mostly.

probably half of the Billings club are running 2wd trucks without transfer cases or front diffs - but they ONLY race obstacle and Baja - no drags.

So dump 'em. If you're going to carry any 4wd parts, might as well make it a 4x4..

There's an advantage to that, too. Make it a stripped down but still enclosed 4x4 with a TRUSSED front '44 and rear 60.. and not only can you race it, but you could wheel it, too.

Cut the firewall and move the motor/trans back some more if you want.. run a rear CV if you have to move the NP205 back too far..

Cut the top, but only cut out the rear quarter glass. Make up a set of "skinned" doors, but keep a set of good doors, too.

Keep the heater, but dump anything else you don't really need in the interest of weight.

Then you can put the doors w/ glass back on, a little soft-top for the rear window area, and you can have a convertible "WagonMaster" that you can wheel in the winter in the Badlands.

OR.. when you have the coin, throw ARBs in front/rear and you can compete in rock-crawl comps.. run a married SII t'case in front of the divorced NP205. :D

Still run it open for "baja" races.

Or go low buck and just R&R a pair of Lockrights depending on the event. :)

There ARE a number of tighter more "technical" sections, too.. and the 727s do work pretty well...

No 5: The rules only state that they must be present, not operable.

VERY good, Matt! You're learning quick! :D

Oh, Ok COOL!!!!

I've got a scout for wheeling, and You havn't seen me GET IT yet, I'm not sure how you could truss a 44 to make it stand up. The IFS flex would give it a chance

Tom- you are getting WAY too complicated :flipoff2: KISS!!

Technical, Smechnical. 1 foot up is worth 100 foot around :D:D:D:D
If slowing down won't help, JUICE IT!!! and if slowing down will help, JUICE IT anyhow!!!. Honestly, I think I can crack gears fast enough that the added control/reliability is worth it.

VERY good, M[att! You're learning quick! :D

Awww.. <kicks ground> :emb: Thanks Uncle Tom.

I say go for it, thats what this world needs, a few more gutted race trucks :flipoff2:

gunna get a scout II set up with long travel suspension, maybe IFS, strip it down and gut it, full cage and the works :smokin: I helped a friend of mine out with his 70 camero super stocker, so he owes me a few favors :D

What about racing a 60s Travelall

about the 4wd and 2wd with IFS

what about runing that goffy IFS that ford has but it is also a front driving axel.

The thing Paul has

one cool pic I wish it was mine

Well, we'll see how well my trussed '44 holds up in my rig this year.. the good news is, it's trussed. The bad news is, I know it, and I won't be afraid to pound on it. :D

We could sure try to make one live, Matt.

Especially if you moved the motor back and lightened the heavy pig up.

BUGM weighs just under the 6000lbs GVWR right now.. but seats, glass, doors, back half of the top, tailgate, spare tire, tools, inner fenders, all the left over emmissions garbage, dash...

The driver's floor has already been lightened.. and when you're cruising Rapid and you get stopped, you could just drop your  out through the driver's floor..

Awww.. <kicks ground> :emb: Thanks Uncle Tom.

You might be in luck for a project truck soon, too...

Looking like end of April I have to go drag a '75 150 pickup home.. supposedly in pretty nice shape with a bunch of body work n' paint done not long before it was parked... in 1992.

The 392 went, and the guy got so disgusted with it, that was the end of it.

I just need to go get it.. and if it's half as nice as he says it is, it's twice as nice as BUGM. :-)

Michelle wants to see the Big Ugly Green Machine disappear.. I'd really like another (nicer) Travelall, but if a 1/2T pickup falls into my lap that fits the bill..

You know how rusty BUGM is.. it'd be a lot of work to fix it up.. but to tear it down for a racer? :D

Tom- if Bugm gets thrown out, I've give him a happy home.
Not exactly what I wanted to start with, but it'll work
That Ford TTB idea needs some cosideration. I wonder if Mad Mike Jongling could beef one up enough???
