aw4 should have the same number of splines for the tc but you will need to control it. You will likely need a shorter driveshaft. Try awshifting.com for the controller. I'm waiting on my controler for my xj from him.

I just swapped an AW4 into my 89 MJ. Why? The pilot bearing grenaded and took out the AX15 input shaft and I happened to have an AW4 sitting in the garage. As far as length, the AW4 is exactly an inch longer. If you go this route, you'll need to swap in the shifter, shifter cable, tranny cable, TPS sensor, xfer case linkage, tranny mount, NSS, wiring harness, tranny computer, tranny cooler lines, and a radiator with internal cooler or an external cooler. In 1996 (I think) the AW4 sensors changed so you'll want a tranny computer and harness from the right year. The wiring isn't bad if you have the wiring diagrams and know how to do basic wiring. Also, depending on the year of the donor (Cherokees or some 93 Grand Cherokees), the rear spline count may not match your TC. Honestly, it's a fair amount of work and if your YJ is mostly stock, I'd say sell it and buy an auto.

a tf727 from a waggy will bolt right up or a tf999 from a wrangler...
Thanks for the responses. That sounds like a lot of work for me to do.-lawsoncl.
I thought maybe a 1994 stick would change out with a automatic. I have a guy wanting to sell me a automatic out of a 1995 wrangler YJ and he said it would work. He maybe wanting to sell bad. If anyone else knows please post. thanks

Assuming it is 4.0 auto donor 1995 YJ , it would have a 32RH which is also electronically controlled. It's a 3-speed with no overdrive so you'd run 20% higher rpms in top gear. Also not a straightforward swap as you still have to resolve the control issues. I don't know if the 32RH used a seperate trans computer like the AW4. I have heard the 30RH and 32RH trannies are not overly reliable, like most other Chrylser auto trannies. Checkout Jeeptech for more info on what trannies Jeep used http://www.jeeptech.com/wiki/index.php/Transmission/Factory.
