View Full Version : Gun people: Cryo treating a barrel

I am getting a FAL this weekend :bounce: I am getting it for a good deal because the previous owner shot corrosive ammo he did not know was corrosive and pitted the barrel (no idea on how bad) but is including a brand new barrel with it :D
would you cryo treat the new barrel?
would or can you cryo treat a chrome lined barrel ?

There's debate on whether it's good for world class shooters. For a standard FAL barrel, not worth it.

Just shoot the damn thing. :flipoff2: I plan on it :flipoff2: but i would like to make as accurate AND reliable main battle rifle as I can. That and I will have some time while I beat on the other barrel

Use JB bore compound for hand lapping if it's not a chrome lined bbl.
Chrome lined bbl's don't need lapping or any other special treatment. They are chrome lined for durability and to reduce fouling...not accuracy.

yup. but if i can keep the lands/grooves nice and sharp for longer then it may be worth it also but i have no clue if cryo treatment of hard chrome will do shit or is even worth the effort.

I get most of my stuff from Brownells or midway.
From a manufacturers site.
DOES CRYOGENIC ("CRYO") TREATMENT OF BARRELS HELP IN ANY WAY?
No.
ArmaLite has frequently been offered cryogenic barrel treatment services, with promised increases in accuracy, life expectancy, and easier cleaning. In each case we have stated that we would consider the treatment only when provided solid engineering data proving the promised benefits. No salesman ever returned with the data.
In late 1998 an experienced High Power competitor and official of Sierra Bullets, Mr. Kevin Thomas, published an excellent article in Precision Shooter magazine that reported results of a well designed test that confirmed no measurable benefit from the treatment.
Until independent, scientific evidence to the opposite is provided, ArmaLite will not resort to or recommend cryogenic treatment.
WHY DOES ARMALITE OFFER THREE TYPES OF BARRELS (CHROME MOLY, CHROME LINED, AND STAINLESS STEEL)
Because each barrel has advantages suited to different uses.
ArmaLite's Chrome Moly barrels have excellent internal surface finishes, and offer excellent accuracy for a reasonable price. Chrome lined barrels offer excellent corrosion protection and slightly longer life expectancy, but are more expensive than unchromed barrels. In addition, the process of electro polishing the barrels, and the chroming process itself, tend to reduce accuracy somewhat. Stainless is easy to process to fine surface finishes, and provides moderate corrosion resistance.

I may be wrong, but I do not think Armalite makes the barrels themselves. Some think it bad practice to admit that something they have not done to their product would make it better and therefore refuse to admit. I know their is great discussions over this. Would I cryo a finished barrel? NO... Most of my new guns get custom barrels anyway. Here is the catch!! They ARE cryo'd by the maker to begin the whole process!! Cryo'ing the blanks produces less scrap due to better machining! This can only help in the long run, not harm. Can it make a better shooter out of an allready machined blank? I do not think it would as much as cryo'ing it before any machine or rifling work is done... I know their are preferences for barrel makers and even arguments on lapping and fire lapping. For me, I went over the recordbooks and went from their and have been REAL happy with my custom AR. My next build is for a F-class TR rifle.

So, with this talk of barrels and accuracy,
Does a barrel need "breaking in"
I have read of....
One shot, cool, clean, repeat until the first patch is clean.
Haven't bought a new firearm in a while so haven't tried it myself.
Coments? Questions?

Fire lapping the new barrel would help accuracy more. imho.
I disagree and so do most gunsmiths since all you will do is wear out a good barrel.

not unless you really like cleaning your weapon :flipoff2: most damage to a barrel is done via idiots and the bore brush :D
I have heard more NO than yes on that subject

FN-FAL, http://hornscustomrifles.com/pic/6-2005/00-1000-016.jpg
Belgian made, magazine feed, gas operated, .308 Main Battle Rifle. Used by the Brits, Indians, Germans, and many other armies. Found a couple para models in Iraq. Very nice rifle. Getting hard to find a good used example below $750.
Variations include the CETME, SLR, L1A1, and the G3.

Lets see, a rifle that is custom chambered with tight throat tolerances and one that has the barrel replaced often. That is a whole different animal than what most people have.

Someone said that lapping improves accuracy.
You said you disagree.
I was just pointing out that many high ranked shooters do lap their barrels because it DOES improve accuracy.
