95 and newer should have 31 splines and disk brakes.

Tons of info on these available with the search function.

An 8.8" out of what? The 8.8" was used in close to 20 different models. You will have to me more specific.

Better yet, do a search because this question has been asked about 10,000 times.

a simple fool proof way to check is:

If it has 5 lugs and Disc Brakes, it is 31 Spline

Simple!

All explorers are 31 spline. Rangers are 28. Every answer here is in other threads in Jeep Talk

Nope

PRE 97 explorers are 28 spline man

SOME of the new Ranger SPORT TRAC's (ugly 4 door things) have 31 splines! My buddy just got one from a wreck (saw and counted em myself)

I am willing to be a  on it!

:D

Every explorer 8.8" axle I have ever seen has been 31 spline, and I have seen a TON. Period.

Has anyone ever seen a 28 spline explorer axle? Or is this just pure conjecture?

Andy

Wrong. Lincoln, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Mustang with 5 lugs and disc brakes are 28 spline.

Explorers all have 31 spline. The 28 spline Explorer axle is a myth that has yet to be proven.

I have allways been under the assumption that, all Explorers had 31 splines,....but you have already got so much conflicting information, that you either need to take a leap oif faith, or have someone tear it open and count them for you.
By all means post your findings when you get them, so that this can be debunked once and for all.
Good luck

Well here are my findings.

I have looked at over 75 Exploder rear ends. To the point of counting splines. THEY WERE ALL 31.

I have a 92 Drum sitting in my garage right now. It is a 31. I spent a lot of time at the Junk yards when I decided to do this swap. Escpecially since I have time to spare right now.

I have NEVER seen a Exploder with a 28.

Take it for what it is worth. But those are my findings. I am not saying that there might not be the occasional 28 out there (Ford is as bad as Jeep in keeping track of what they put in vehicles) but they seem to be the exception not the rule.

The only way to really clear this up for yourself is to start pulling them apart and form your own opinion, but I will tell you what, I got this explorer rear for nothing because the guy thought it was a 28 and did not want to take the time to salvage it out of a burned out Exploder. Bought new brakes from a 98 for 200 bucks and bam a 31 spline disc'd 8.8 for 200 bucks. I was going to regear and lock anyway so that is not figured into my initial purchase cost.

ok so i the exploder guys said 31 spline...well here is the reply i got ack from moser engineering

"The information I have shows all of the explorers had 31 spline axles but the axles in the 95-newer models were different lengths than the 90-94.

Thank you,

Moser Engineering"

sounds to me like 31 spline all along...except for the couple odd balls

I was looking into ford 8.8 and 9" axles and found several just in the JEEP postings! In the search mode, I simply typed in "8.8" and got so frikin much info my 'puter took a crap on me. No seriously though, why so much individual posts on just this ONE topic? If this topic were on one thread, there would be countless pages of it.
Why-o-why must there be SO many individual postings on just ONE axle! :flipoff2: :D
COMEON now people, even THIS newbie knows better than that. :flipoff2: ;)
