Most of us living in CA with a vehicle less than 20 years old have dealt with the smog check and certification. I am familiar with the test only, pre-test, etc. I have previously failed a pretest and the only thing that saved my gross polluter NOx Butte Ocks is that it was a pre-test. The EGR fixed it. What happens if you pre-test and they find your non-CARB header ? Do they turn you in or do they just fail your visual and say have a nice day. Just thought I'd check 1st. Thanks .........:D

Dude, I would not take that rig out for a month or two. Give things a chance to cool off a bit. No doubt the is a APB out on it right now!

Thanks Keith. But not to worry. The header is in a box, the cracked stock exhaust manifold is on the rig. I passed smog. The header is purported to run clean, it even has the port for the O2 sensor. The manufacturer gave up trying to certify it in CA. I wanted to find out what the consequences are of being detected while trying to sneak it by the bi annual inspection and testing with the header on. I did a search, there is a lot of misinformation regarding smog, the ARB and the DMV in CA. I was looking for someone with a similar experience. You absolutely do not want to be tagged a gross polluter here. If you hear a really loud crappy sounding Toyota, thats my Isuzu. There are worse things and people "on to me" than the smoglidytes LOL :D

Give up and sell it (of course then it has to be smogged to resell), or trailer it only or just dump it. Usually not worth the $$ and pain.

27156. (a) No person shall operate or leave standing upon any
highway any motor vehicle which is a gross polluter, as defined in
Section 39032.5 of the Health and Safety Code.

Hi Bug. I couldn't read all the ARB and Calif Vehicle Code BS, it just goes on and on. As I recall, hersay, mind you, that your car is poxed, and once a gross polluter, always a gross polluter, and from then on has to be tested and certifed every year instead of biannually. I am not sure about this............ Are you goin to Moab ZuZu ?

If i am not mistaken, if you fail a pre-test, the results still go to the DMV and BAR, so they know something was up. Check for yourself, they know you are up to something. I put my junk in there and they show me failing pre-tests, and even going in to just get a quick sniff to see where I was at. (they dont show why you fail though).

MasterBeavis, you are the master. Thanks for the "missing link."
There I am, Gross Polluter, they do turn in the results, and record them, but you don't get nailed if it's a pre-test. My NOx was like 1900 with 1100 allowed. Damm EGR and switch. I feel so much better its clean. LOL So............if they find the non-CARB header, it fails, tampering, and gets turned in. Guess I'll just switch back to the OEM manifold for the smog test. Hope that flexy pipe between the header flange and the CAT doesn't bust. :) :) :)

That isn't true, my 22R Toy was a "gross polluter" due to bad carb and smog pump. I was sent to a test only station and then it passed. That was two years ago.

I'm due this year- I hate that stupid test-

Get this, they're phisically testing gas caps now. cap fails = pay $20 on the spot for a new one or get it down the street for 4.95 and bring it back for a retest for another $20 or so.
