: Help with my plan for a Jeep
Tide612 11-26-2005, 09:10 PM Alright i am buying a project jeep. First off it is in pieces and i going to be put together. I am planning on installing a dana 44 front and either a dana 44 rear or a explorer 8.8 rear. I am building but dont want to put a carbed motor in. I have a 5.0 out of lincoln town car and was wondering if this would work. If not what fuel injected cheap motor should i use?
Basically the list.
CJ-7
dana 44 front-3.54 gear
AMC20 rear-3.54-starter axle till find something better
Some kind of fuel injected motor
Some kind of tranny
Some Kind of trans case.
HELP ME OUT WITH THE LAST 3.
Can i use the 5.0 or should i sell the car and find something else?
88 mangler 11-27-2005, 09:10 AM if you are planning on running a d44 in the front you might as well get one out of a waggy and find a rear d44 out of the same vehicle, this way they are the same lug pattern. for the motor i know of a few people that run 5.0 and love them. theres are also out of mustangs though, really dont know if that makes a differance.for the tranny do you want to run a manual or auto?
Tide612 11-29-2005, 08:34 AM I want to run a auto. I was thinking either a C6 or C4. Dont really care becuase both can handle the power. I was thinking about runnning the NP 205 behind that also.
I also was told about runnning the 4.0 jeep motor with a turbo350 bhind that. I have the body and axles now the onlt thing i really need is the motor and trans figured out.
butch6924 11-29-2005, 08:49 AM I'd try to get my hands on a YJ or XJ 4.0L drivetrain. Super simple & reliable motor, may want to look for a slightly stronger tranny. Any tranny that was bolted to the back of a CJ 258 will bolt onto to a 4.0L but I'm not sure about shaft engagement. You can reuse your t-case if you don't want to step up to something else just yet. An 82 or newer CJ7 would have the long output D300 which the speedo sensor for a YJ harnass plugs right into.
If it were me it'd go like this:
motor: XJ/YJ 4.0L (92 or newer due to conversion to 4.0L HO)
tranny: AX-15 (not the strongest but probably bolted to any 4.0L you're going to find
T-case: Late model CJ D300
axle (f): HP XJ non-disconnect D30 front (I know, it's not hardcore but it'll hold up to 35's)
axle (r): Ford 8.8 w/ Discs
Flashover Mfg 11-29-2005, 09:21 AM Keep the 5.0. I would run a C4 behind it. They are smaller, lighter, and more efficient than a C6, and plenty strong for anything that you can take with D44 axles. I would adapt your existing D300 t-case.
Tide612 11-29-2005, 11:30 AM thanks for the info. keep it coming please
scoot 11-29-2005, 12:19 PM http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45309 info on 5,0 swap read and read . Id run the 5,0 u already have . I have a 5,0 efi block in my f150 that runs fine for me . We are gonna swap a 5,0 in a 97 tj here in a few weeks
Fozzy_Bear 11-29-2005, 01:09 PM I don't have a lot of experience with the 4x4 portion of the build, but the engine does have one thing about it. The overhead cam ford engines have more of their mass higher than either the 4.0 jeep or a small block chevy alternative.
If you are serious enough that shifting the CG a few inches is important to you, then keep that in mind. If shifting a few pounds around is more "granular" then the rest of the engineering you are doing... never mind. The 5.0 is a fine engine.

x2 buy a totaled cherokee that got rear ended and still runs fine...
Tide612 11-29-2005, 08:35 PM that is a great suggestion. I could do that. Going tomorrow to find out what the yard has.

That is really the setup that i was looking at if i kept the 5.0. Still considering the the 4.0 though with dana 44's front and back.
