I have searched and did not see any new post about this...

I was looking at the Holley web site and they say you no longer need a laptop to set up the current projection system.
http://www.holley.com/products.asp?product=502-20S

So I was wondering if anyone has done this to their Ford?
My wife has a 1982 full size Bronco with a 1983 Ford van engine (351W) in it.
She is running a stock auto tranns. She wants EFI and I am thinking this looks like the easier way to go. Covert the truck to EFI or install the projection? that is the question. Everyone I know with projection says they love it. Of course everyone loves their EFI, but after watching a half dozen folks do the conversion and everyone of them takes at least amonth to get it running. and every one who does the projection takes a week or so...

It makes me believe the projection is an easier installation.

Anyone have an opinion about this?

That is still the same 'old' system and it never did need a laptop..which is partly why it is/was limited to essentially stock aplications and was no good for everyday use without the closed-loop option.

The Commander systems require a laptop for good reason...you can set up and tune/tweek every feature that ever was required ina good EFI package. There is no comparison between the Commander laptop-tunable systems and the ProJection systems. I swear by the first..would not take the second if you gave me one.

I run the projection kit that I got off ebay for about $400. It's a great system for offroading. I've been told you will loose about 1-2 mpg with it. For my truck it didn't matter, but for a DD I wouldn't. You should be able to sell your van and buy another one that already has EFI for less difference than a new projection kit would cost.

the van motor is not worth anything in my opinion. when we bought it We were under the impression the motor was in better shape than it was. But last compression check it has cylinders with 60 psi next to cylinders with 150 psi. had 3 at 60 psi, 1 at 150 and the rest were like 80-110.

the engine uses between 1-2 quarts of oil per tank full. and has no power. the truck ran better with the 302 we pulled out to put the 351 in.
Now she has decided she wants EFI. I found a 351 with EFI - BUT out of the folks I know that have done a EFI conversion. they all had wiring problems for well over a month. Letting my wife drive her truck with a unreliable system - NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Granted after the bugs are worked out - it would be great. then again i have a buddy that 2 years later (after EFI conversion) still has mystery problems with his rig. It just quits running. then starts up again later.

SO BMC69 - you say the cammander system is better. Once it is set up - do you ned to tweak it to make it run??? I got to have something that can stand alone once its running.

GubNi - why would you not use this for a DD? as far as selling anything to get a rig with EFI in it.... I have offered to buy her a newer rig. she will have nothing to do with a newer rig - My wife looks at her 1982 Bronco the way a 16 year old boy looks at his first car with a set of keys in his hand, new drivers license and never had a chance to take it out yet. Plain and simple - she loves her truck. does not want it replaced. She just wants it to run good and be reliable. And If I cannot provide her with that - then I would say I must not be much of a man who cannot provide the basics for his wife.

My wife has never given me crap over not buying her a ring. She has put up with my crap for over 25 years. She deserves at least a great running truck. She has not gone out to do any real wheeling in over a year because her truck is not reliable and runs like crap. I owe her this.

So you both dont think Projection is NOT worth the money. what do you recommend?

I've been running a Projection 900 CFM unit for 15 years now on a Chevy 502. Love it - works great - has been abused to death. I can't believe it hasn't required maintenance. Did replace the TPS twice ( they don't like repeated drowning. ) I do run closed loop - though it works OK open.

I do plan on going to the Commander eventually just to handle more horsepower ( I'm limited to about 500 HP with the current setup).

I've heard you can loose gas mileage. That's the biggest reason. I thought you were talking about a van instead of a bronco. If it were me I'd convert to fatory type fuel injection. I'm working on a deal to get a complete swap kit. PM me if you are interested.

The Commander system is as close to the best you can get in aftermarket ECMs in my opinion....right up there with Halltech and Turbo-City, etc. It bears no resemblance whatsoever to the ECM for a ProJection system as far as features and performance. It takes a while to set up for a highly modified engine (which is what I am using them on) but once set up, that is it. No more tweeking..no adjustment knobs ..just drive it.
