: How big is too big? (tires)

So we're putting the D60 front, 14B rear in this weekend, unshaved. Which means three things:

1. on fullwidth, the 38's are gonna look funny
2. I'm going to be digging trenches with the diffs
3. The jeep's starting to feel little...

So I'm thinking about new tires. I was thinking 42's... but then I thought, well wtf, if i'm going to pay that much $$ i might as well drop an extra $120 and get the 44's right?

But then I was thinking... Are 44's too big to be practical? At what point do big tires make it _harder_ to get in/out of stuff?

I'm not building a mud truck, this sucker is for rocks & snow mostly..

The down side to 44's is usually the width, most people don't want to be that wide. The 42's are the closest, but without the width. That said, the only guy I know that stepped from 42's to 44's was amazed at how much better they worked. Both were TSL's. It makes for a super wide setup. They also take a lot more fender clearance to work right.

If you just hack off the bottom lip of the 14 bolt up to the bottom 3 bolt heads (leaving them untouched) you'll get 3/4-1" of added clearance.

I did it on mine w/a sawzall and smoothed out what was left w/a grinder. Took two hours and brought the 14 bolt to within 1/4" of the axle-centerline to diff-bottom measurement for my ford 60 front.

Better than nothing

since you mentioned snow- the bigger the better. I'm currently thinking of trading my 42" tsl for some 44" cepeks for the snow exclusively and sticking to 38 or 39 for the rocks. My favorite wheelin' is snow and the rocks are just ok too!

Related question: How wide is too wide?

I'm fullwidth, ~69wms front 67wms rear, 8-10" rims, 4" backspacing ish, thats like 84" wide on 12.5 tires, and like 88 wide on 44's...

my concern with going to 44 or even the 42 inch tires is my d60 will start snapping like my d44 was with 35s. i swapped it so i wouldnt be replacing axles as often and with tires that big i think id be back in the same boat. i stuck with 39.5s for now maybe bigger tires will go on if i dont break often with the 39.5s.

i didn't know they could be too big. With the ditch witch in the rear you want some 39.5s or larger.

I think Kevin Yoder runs 42s on his CJ7. they seem to work well for him.

those look to me like 39" boggers on cut down axles. 38s dont "look" goofy on full width axles. if your constantly hung up on the axles then go bigger. 42s should be a good compromise of highth and width. try the 38s for awhile unless you already had problems of sitting on the axles. just my .02 (and thats about all its worth):flipoff2:

i run 42 tsl's and i think they are the perrfect comprimise of weight/height/width...gonna try some 44's soon though.

the size of your jeep is inversely proportioned to how often it is drivable. the more work you do to it, the less it will run. with that being said.

Yep. I wasn't into welding and fawking w/ the ring gear. We took a good hard look a t the axle and with that lip cut off there is still 3/4+ inches of housing left. That's plenty strong.

Just made 3 cuts with the sawzall passing right by the bolt heads (which have a flared top making them as wide as a normal head w/a washer). Then I smotthed it with the grinder till I liked the way it looked.

My end result was 1"+ gain. Close enough to the 60 that I don't feel bad running 37's.

42s, didn't he go coilovers in the rear also? (sorry, off subject):p

I've got the bigarse forklift inners with 35spl outers, and the dutchman alloy 35spliers in the rear. I don't think i'll be breaking the axles, even on 44's...

That said...

I'll probably try it on 38's for a while and see how it goes. If I have helluva problems banging the diffs around, guess I'll buy bigger meats. Thanks guys.

You might want to think about extending your wheelbase a little too. This will at least get you a little closer to being able to do a slickrock type obstacle when you're that high

Just an FYI newb,

I've seen stock (close to stock at least) wheelbase Jeeps with 40"+ tires whoop slickrock. And yes they were tall too. Seeing you're on the east coast, will you be at ERocC in April? I'm guessing since you seem to know how to set up a Jeep so well that I'll see you competing. Right:question:

We're building the suspension for ~102" wheelbase I believe... And it really won't be that high, we actually took 1" of lift _out_ from what I had with 38's... I'll just cut more sheetmetal :D
