Don't know what happened to my original post, but it sure was messed up. Here's what happened to one of the two stock suzuki ujoints left in my truck. All the rest are spicer 1310s, and it looks like its time for 2 more! (until I get the v6 in anyway)...

Custom intermediate shaft, eh? What you running for an engine/tranny combo?

What were you doing when it broke? Figure it is fatigue or over stress related?

This was a new joint I changed out just before I drove down and did TDS, started making noise last wed nite, and thursday morning blew up on the way to work...I find that when I beat on my rig this intermediate shaft gives me more grief than anything else......

Hmm, strange it would be a culprit on a regular basis. Is the shaft balanced? It is pretty short... Funny vibes might be messing up your u-joints and making them fail early...

Ujoints don't move much with shaft rotation? Drying out maybe?

Dunno, just some ideas.

that's funny. when i had finally swapped out my stock driveline u-joints for new, all of them were pretty well shagged, but only the needles and cups.
*except* the intermediary shaft's which the bearings were just fine, nice and lubed up, but the yokes were all ovalled out causing the caps to spin and clack around inside them.
it kinda surprised me to find this. anyone else?

That's interesting....

It looks like they used one of the cast yokes for that end? I wonder if the welding stressed the material, or there was an existing crack in the yoke. Possibly from the u-joint change. See if there was any rust or signs of ware along the fracture line.....

That particular yoke was not designed to handle a weld so close by, I'd guess that is what caused the failure. There is no way the 1.6 and tranny generated enough torque to break it. I've been using that same joint behind a GRSII for over a year now. I also used a spare shaft which had been damaged (towed with a u-joint GONE and half the yoke wore away) on my rear for several months without a problem.... Just can't believe a weak joint caused that....

That's along the lines of what I am thinking - either manufacturing defect in the joint or plain, old fashioned fatigue.

But he did say that this joint having a problem is a regular occurance.

Weird.

This is the fourth or fifth ujoint in the intermediate shaft to let go over the last 3 years...One I dont really count since it went when my tcase broke/mounts bent/bolts broke(spidytrax)/all around good time on sledge...At the time, the tcase was rolling around between skid and underbody, ujoint had no choice at the angles it went thru in those couple of seconds....So, three or four. That does include dozens of abusive runs, so I didn't think it too odd...Witht the 44s and 3/4 ton driveshafts, something has to give way, I'm just kinda tired of it now...

Anybody ever tried usind a cv joint (saginaw w/flanges) to replace this shaft?
