From '72-'80, the official VIN is stamped on a plate and rivited to the driver's door. There is a printed decal on the driver's door jamb (b-pillar) that contains the VIN. Also, the VIN is USUALLY stamped in the frame rail right below the front seat on either the driver's side or the passenger's side.
There may be other locations.

to add to what trent said, from 81 to 93 they are located on the drivers side of the dash, right up against the windsheild, as well as being on the decal and stamped on the frame.
