: Help With Lockers!!!
c_t_22 11-30-2005, 03:41 PM Alright so i have been pricing out lockers lately and there is many choices. I am looking to get some opinions here because i have never had experience with any of these lockers and im hoping someone who has can steer me in the right direction. This is for a toyota 8" 4cyl rear diff if that matter. This will be going into a my daily driver which i drive to work and school in every day, it only has 31x12.5 muds and will probly never go bigger than 33's. noise althought isnt really that big of a deal unless it is so horribly loud it hurts my ear drums haha. Here is a list of the prices i have found...
Aussie Lockers:
New- 225+29 Shipping = 254 usd or $296.45 cad
Detroit EZ Locker:
New- 240+23 shipping = 266 usd or $310.40 cad
Lockright Locker
New- 197+22 shipping = 219 usd or $255.60 cad
alright now those are the ones i am looking to buy but am having a hard time deciding because i have never tried any of them. if some people could throw their opinions at me thatd be great. if you were me what one would you buy? thanks for your time
Terry4X4 11-30-2005, 03:59 PM It might help to know what vehicle these would be going into. I don't have any experience with the Aussie's. The EZ Locker and Lockrite are virtually the same, a.k.a. as lunch box lockers.
I ran the EZ Locker in the front of my IFS Yota for 5 years before I finally broke an axle shaft. If you plan to put one of these in the rear it will bang ... A LOT. For a DD I wouldn't recommend one of these in the rear. I'd go with a selectable locker if possible, depends on your budget and how much pavement your vehicle sees. The EZ Locker/Lockrites are cheap but you get what you pay for.
c_t_22 11-30-2005, 04:14 PM alright thanks a lot. my truck is a 85 toyota with 4cyl 8" diff... i will add that up top. and a lunchbox locker is definetely my only option because i dont have much to spend. ive heard about ox cable lockers though... i will check those out right now, thanks Terry.
anyone else have anything to say?

how does the aussie differ from the lunchbox Detroit and Lockright?
MMagnumPI9 11-30-2005, 04:33 PM it doesnt. Its a lunchbox locker also.
c_t_22 11-30-2005, 04:52 PM alright thanks, any other opinions?
Pietro 11-30-2005, 05:30 PM once you get used to the automatic lockers like an aussie/lockright/EZ, you will never fourwheel without one. The ARB's and others are out of the question so just throw a lockright in it and learn to live with it. The truck will want to fishtail more in the snow, but that is half the fun:D

that sounds good but im trying to decide which name brand to go for.... is it worth the extra but of cash for detroit or should i just go for the cheapest possible?
NetBSD 11-30-2005, 06:41 PM if you search youll find we coverd this topic when i asked the same question a few months ago, i was short on cash and just got a mini-spool, and i love it. locked the rear for about $50
84Toyota4x4 11-30-2005, 06:47 PM I just threw a Yukon full spool in mine and called it good. Cheaper than a locker, and does the same damn thing only without moving parts, which to me equates to less chance of malfunction or breakage. I got mine for $125 shipped.
In case you dont know, mini-spool goes inside the stock rear carrier like a lunchbox locker does, full spool replaces the whole carrier.

c_t_22 11-30-2005, 07:23 PM yeah i checked spools out a while ago... im pretty set on gettin a lunchbox locker even though spools are quite a bit cheaper
c_t_22 11-30-2005, 07:24 PM yeah i checked spools out a while ago... im pretty set on gettin a lunchbox locker even though spools are quite a bit cheaper. im still lookin for opinions on what you guys would buy according to the above prices
Pietro 11-30-2005, 07:28 PM I can't comment on a spool because I never drove with one but considering your rig only has 31's and will probably not go much bigger like you mentioned, I wouldn't worry about the strength differences between all of the lunchbox lockers, get the lockright because it is cheapest
BTW, I think your yota requires you to remove the differential from the removable center section and then the ring gear must come off to get the cross shaft out, a little more involved than the average install

that shouldnt be a problem and thanks yeah i think i am gonna go for the lockright
Pietro 11-30-2005, 07:42 PM you could probably find a used one the yota forum, I am sure someone has a locker layin around
heres one on ebay:

Jeffh555 11-30-2005, 08:25 PM i say buy the one that will be easiest to find replacement parts for, when i broke my lockright (not if, but when), i was able to get replacement pins and springs easily through a local shop.
otherwize, get the quickloc from 4wp, they can get you parts, its all the same shit

yeah all of these are off of ebay and as for the link i asked and that guy will not ship to canada:shaking:
positrack@earthlink. 11-30-2005, 10:52 PM I have heard that the Aussie locker is smoother and quieter than the others and at least as strong, if not stronger. I haven't had any personal experience w/ the Aussie though, just hearsay. I can tell you that they seem to have great customer service. I E-mailed the cust. serv. guy a few months ago with a few questions about the D60 Aussie that is under developement and he got back to me in less than a day and answered all of my questions intelligently. I was pretty impressed. Just some fuel for the fire... :smokin:
BTW, if you went full spool, you'd have to set up the R+P which I'm guessing you don't wanna do.
MuddyV8YJ 12-02-2005, 06:43 AM get the aussie.
aviatorsman 12-10-2005, 08:03 PM Aussie Lockers are the best thing in my opinion. they seem to be quite and are very strong. go here and talk to the guy with the forum name aussielocker
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=251180
They have the best customer service by far. You may be able to get one cheaper than the price you have above. my buddies have other lunchbox lockers and cannot get help easily like I could with my Aussie.
Fordtrucks 12-10-2005, 08:23 PM There was too much to read here tonite so my reply to (what locker) is
