my POS 200$ 84 chief 2-door wont stay in 4-low. it is pretty funny because you slap it in 4-low and put it in gear and the sucker grinds like there is no tomorrow!!! anyone have any ideas. it is gonna be a budget beater and probably see a lot of time away from contact with the ground if you know what i mean so i would like to have 4-low since the stock 2.8 is a POS for power!! please help a fellow XJ lover out even if he is gonna trash it !!!

Surely a rock crawler extraordinaire should be able to figure out why his transfer case keeps popping out of gear :D

Mo's right;) the lingage bushings are trash, and the grinding...ya got to yank it in low...ya want a low buck fix, take a tie down strap and strap in gear (a bunch of TJ peole do that the first time they hit the trail with their fresh 3" body lift:flipoff2: )
or your TC is broke...or you have a two wheel drive grocery getter and your shifting the auto into reverse:rasta:

I had this very same problem with my 84 XJ pioneer.
I tried adjusting it three times to eliminate all freeplay. But no matter how I adjusted it, it never fully engaged. The bushings were not bad at all.
The lever (on the shaft) of the lowrange selector, was bent. I could've just bent it back into place, but thought that this would happen again. So I went to the U-Pull-It and yanked one out. Instant gratification, it works llike new.:D
While you're there, check the relay rod adjustments, and check for a bent relay rod.

HA HA!:flipoff2:
At least they're cheap to pick up. Mine has NEVER left me stranded, as of yet. Other than the fact that AMC chose a POS Chevy engine, these rigs are very capable in stock form. Throw on a little lift, biger tires, and other simple junk, they do very well.

Good luck with yours.:D
