I recently bought a trailer to haul my K5 that is built from a mobile home chassis. the original owner had planned on making it long enough to haul 2 jeeps, but i shortened it to a more 'feasible' length of 23'. i was looking at the axles today (tandem with both axles having electric brakes), and they seemed kinda small. meaning the axle tube doesnt look too beefy.

Is there a way i can find out their capacity i.e. 2000lb, 3000 lb, 3500lb etc.? axle tube size? spindle size? wheel bearing size? the rims are NOT moble home rims, they are 5 on 5 1/2 x 16". the bearing cap screws on and is the size of a copenhagen can, with the bearings about the same size as any other trailer i have messed with.

any comments besides:flipoff2:   :vader2:  :rainbow: :rainbow: welcome

You need to measure the spindle size at the small end I believe. They usually spec out at 1", 1 1/8", 1 1/4"--I believe this corresponds to 2000lb, 3500, 5000lb. Gennerally 5 lugs are 3500 lb or less and 6 lug are 5000 to 6000 lb and 8 lug is 6000 lb on up. Check with a trailer place to be sure--they can probably tell by your bearing sizes if you bring them with you. Oh yeah, 10" brakes are 3500lb and 12" are 5000-6000lb.

OK, someone has to be the smartass here... your axles are only gonna be as good as your tires. If you have a matched set of tires, multiply the rating by four. If it is an unmatched set, take the lowest rated tire and multiply it by four.:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:

Alright, pull the bearings and see if you can get a good number off of them. Seals are good places to get numbers also. Call Six States, and if they ain't busy, they will usually look it up for you. Also, look at the axle tube real well. See if there is a plate on there that will at least give you the name of the manufacturer.

why don't you call a steel seller. here in town you give them the rating you want on your axle. they build them in about 2-4 weeks and you can choose what you want for a bolt pattern ect ect, ect! its almost too easy!
