This is kinda off topic, but as many fabricators we have here I figure someone knows...

What is the best way to cut slots in steel? I have a torch and a drill press. No mill(which would make it easy)

It is in 1/4" plate, for motor mounts on a cart...

I've drilled the end points, and cut out the center part with a cutoff wheel... kinda like this

*====*

Where the * are the drilled holes, and the = indicates the sides of the slot I used the cutoff wheel on

mo's way will work, i would, depending on how clean you want the cuts, drill 2 holes and use a sawzall, makes a cleaner cut....allthough plasma would be my #1 choise :D

what about his cutting torch?

Sure, but it's gonna ne ugly! Maybe you can try cleaning it up with a die grinder and some special bits, or a dremal type tool.

I don't know how wide this has to be but I would definately drill the holes on the ends and probably one in the center. I would use something to cut that wouldn't require grinding to make it look nice on the inside edge. The plasma or flame torch will leave the kerf marks or whatever that is called. I would use a skill saw, circular saw or sawzall depending on the width of the slot, just something with fine teeth.

I asked a similar question and the answer was carbide bur and an air die grinder.

Worked awesome.

I use these VERY thin cut off wheels. There only .045 thick and cut 1/4 and 3/8 plate like butter:D

Those are badass old scout...I buy them by the box...
Just don't let it bend, or they go to pieces fast...

You can do what a friend of mine did. Find an X-Y table attachment for your drill press and run a milling bit in the chuck.
