Does anyone know how to get to these trails that are near reno?

Curtis

Peavine is easy. It is the mountain to the north west of downtown Reno (the one with the radio antennas all over it). It's a blast cause the terrain is easy 2wd stuff to get yourself in deep shit major pucker factor areas. The entire area is covered with trails that go back into the Stampede Res. area, up to Stead and all around the mountain.

Not sure about Bronco Hill.

Give me an e-mail when you want to go, I'll show you where they are. I'll even show you some more difficult trails all within minutes of downtown Reno.

BD is right-on about Bronco. The REAL trail on Peavine is about 1.5 miles of sluice-box type action. It's a bit more challenging than Bronco because you can't drive around the hard stuff. These trails are both hard to give directions to because there are so many other roads all over the place.

Peavine trails are 90% easy.... I did go up a nasty hill climb, tons of sand, and took 15 minues of  to get up!

FeCamel

Yeah, at least 90% of Peavine is 2WD. But there is one hidden canyon of fun. Just for reference, it took a Cruiser with 33s and a rear locker about 4 hours to get through it, with stacking and winching. I've never even seen a Jeep try it before. We can usually get through it in about 1.5-2 hours.

Moon Rocks is east of 395 (and Peavine), north of Reno/Sparks. (West of Pyramid Lake).

FeCamel

The good trail on Peavine is about 5 minutes from downtown Reno in the North-West. Moonrocks is about 20 miles North of Reno off of Pyramid highway, about 1/2-2/3 the way to the lake.

when I was working in Reno, I did some wheeling near Virginia City... Any rough trails out that way? All I found was some pretty moderate stuff... But the WILD HORSES running around was really cool!!!!! :roxy:

Prison Hill in Carson City (between the two prisons). El Dorado Canyon has some and then Hackett.

Your only a 2 hour tug behind the tow rig, from Roseville.
Ill call Jake Hallenbeck and see if wants to run his Sammi up through there also
Shoot when I was living in Reno, the only Cruizah, I could get to go wheelin with me on a regular basis was Gil Anderson.

Reno in early May, could be anything from Thunderstorms, to freezing winds howling down from the Sierras to 90 degree weather.
The nights will be fairly cold though, and its just dirt and shrubs.

We just went yesterday! 3 Toy trucks, and me in my little Sami. I had to get tugged once (by three guys and a strap, not a vehicle) to get over one waterfall thing. I still think I did well for open-open and only 65:1.

We've got a few heavy-hitters on the way. My Cruiser is in the garage for now, so are 3 other members' cruisers, but we will be ready soon. One of our guys also has Alan Lunghi's FJ55 tube buggy thing now. Peavine is fun because it's close to town and short. We can check out some more difficult runs if your Jeep is up to it. :D

I never said that trail was particularly tough, I just said it was the toughest of the Peavine area, and that it's short and fun. I can show you guys a few interesting trails not on Peavine.

I fried the Sami's starter today, so I might not be driving for a bit. I'll still show you guys some trails if anyone ever makes it up this way, maybe somebody will even have an empty seat. :flipoff2:

Its a Sammi,..put a lawnmower pull string on it and lets go.
:flipoff2:

My tranny will swapped and ready this weekend, but I dont know if I wanna tug the Jeep over the hill to run a 45 minute trail, then trail ride around Pevine. I have explored the Pevine area plenty, and its pretty,... errr, very boring. Seventh Street and Hunter lake are about the same as just going to Prarie City down here 15 minutes away. The way you made it sound like "No Jeep had ever attempted it", it sounded like it wopuld be worth a trip.
Maybe when were out there for CalROCS we can make a quick run at it.
Jake says they've found some fun new trails out there also.

FeCamel, how about Prison Rocks (Hill). Bronco might be accessable now. Maybe Moon Rocks and let H8 get in some practice runs.

Belly Dragger may have a suggestion or three.

It would be great to get a run going before Cal Rocs.

Right awn!
I have ran Bronco Several times. In fact Jake hallebeck and myself were the 1st ones to run, the last 1/4 mile section (along with a Bronco, but I cant remeber the guys name). It was about 3 years ago, we both broke a few parts punching through the last section, but 12 other rigs including Gil Andersons, monsterouse, 383 stroked and blown, Cruiser, all watched from up above on the bypass, while we had a blast.
I have some great pics from that day.
I have also ran Moon Rocks, quite a few times, it should be a fun competition, and a great spectator area.
Stevens Loop has a great little off shoot canyon, that we 1st found on a Summit Racing Run about 2 years ago with Mike Shaffer.
I would llove to get up there and run some trails again.

Hehe I'm sure MANY Jeeps could easily conquer Peavine. It's just not a very well-known trail, everybody who knows about it drives Toys, and I like to stir the Jeep/Toy/Suzi pot. :flipoff2: There are some very awesome canyons by Bronco. We found a good one we call Dead Horse Canyon. It would be interesting to try, and it would definately be a long one. It is probably 10 times the length of Bronco, and it is a lot more technical in spots. It is a virgin canyon though, there are no signs that it's been wheeled in a decade or more.

I don't have a problem, either day. One of the parts about Bronco that's good is you can get crazy or bail without missing all the action as the "bypass" is 50 yards away. Also good just in case you break.

Prison Hill offers crazy to mild within a few feet of each other, not really a trail but a whole lot of Potato Salad Hill and Dump Bumps.

However I think H8 would like some more extreme so.... I don't want to spoil anyones fun so whatever, just let me know, I'll be there.

FeCamel
03-29-2002, 04:27 PM
There are lots of options. With the group that seems to be accumulating, I think Bronco would be a good choice. It is pretty moderate until the end, which has a bypass. Some people think Bronco is too easy, but they are just picking the easy lines, you can make it as difficult as you want. I WAS going to send some of the guys that want extreme action down the virign Dead Horse Canyon, but it has only been walked. We did drive down it about 1/10 of the way, then it gets very technical. It might be better to save it for a camping trip, at least for the innaugural run. Bronco is a long way to drive (on dirt) just to run a 1/2 mile shoot. If people want more, we could always do Peavine after, before, or the next day. What do you guys think? I can't wait to see the Amigo in action, I saw it go through Bronco when it was little with 33s.

We can meet at 9AM Saturday Arpil 6th. Take I-80 East out of Reno, and get off at the Lockwood exit. Stay to the right (South), and at the bottom of the off-ramp there is a big, flat dirt lot. That will be a good place to meet and unload the rigs for those of you who are trailering. It is a short drive on pavement, then about a 1.5 hour drive on dirt to get to the Bronco trailhead, depending on how fast we travel. We should be at the trailhead by around 11AM, and we will probably be done with it by 1:30PM, back to pavement by 3PM if you don't want to look at any other trails. There are a few other canyons on the way in/out that we can check out if anybody is game. Let me know if anybody has any better ideas. People can crash at my place if they wish (bring your blankets/cots/air mattresses). We can also arrange for another trip on Sunday, or even Friday night, depending on when people want to come up. I can be reached via e-mail at fecamel@hotmail.com, or by phone at 775-337-6354 (my name is Matt). There are a ton of fun trails in the Reno area, hopefully we will have a decent turnout.

More fights loom over open space

4/20/2002

The dispute between northwest Reno residents and users of the lands around Peavine Peak may well be an indication of the shape of things to come as homes continue to climb the slopes leading to the open space that makes this place so attractive to so many.

Peavine Peak has long been a playground for residents, including off-roaders and those who want to engage in activities frowned upon in the more populated areas of the Truckee Meadows. Homebuyers who purposely chose Peavine Peak for their backyard should have known about the problems they were buying into.

That does not excuse, however, the overuse and misuse of the area’s prized open space by people who appear to be unconcerned about how they disturb the neighbors, the damage they cause or the dangers they raise. The environmental damage caused by those who tear up the hillsides with their vehicles already has been well documented, and government officials have been forced to try to restrict off-roaders’ activities around Peavine. But northwest residents also tell tales of late-night parties and gunshots at all times of the day and night. They have a right to be concerned.

The present dispute revolves around the search for a new access point into the open space, but some residents want all access to Peavine cut off. That’s not going to happen. Access to the open spaces around the Reno-Sparks area is a critical part of residents’ quality of life. We need more access, not less. But we also need a better understanding about how our activities affect our neighbors; we need awareness, and we need some manners.

It’s important that we not forget those principles because we are going to witness similar disputes in the future, particularly in the Sierra foothills, where development already is well underway.

Government agencies will have no choice but to referee these disputes, and some hard choices will have to be made in the coming years. The changes to what we once took for granted will be hard for many to accept, but, as more people move in, they also will be inevitable.

Got an Idea! We will meet and wheel in the most undesired locations so the opposition tries to close that area! Reverse psycology? I think they hate use more than the love the areas they try to "protect"
