: Sag. pump mod breaks AGR box

yeah, that's right. I modded the Sag. pump earlier this week, and have been driving it around a little. I was very impressed with the additional power, until now. I turned the box all the way to lock, gently to make a u-turn, and POP!, i see fluid spraying out around my bumper. I got out, and it popped the cap off the front of the box. I hope AGR has a good warranty.

If not, what vehicle has a 4 bolt, 4 turn, oversize bore sag. box, was it the waggoneer?? I may need a cheap box...

This mod is dangerous people...

Exactly which mod(s) did you make? I can't think of a reason why the flow mod would make the castings crack unless it weakens the housing somehow.

Which way where you turning when the box went? I doubt it was pressure that did it. If you were turning left, then I would check the steering stops on the knuckle. Sounds to me like it turned too far and the piston in the box popped the cap out. If you were turning right, then it would have to be pressure, but unlikely.

Yeah, i did the #4 washer mod, for more pressure, i didn't do anything flow related. I have no steering bumpstops on the axle, but now i am considering welding some up...

I was turning right, but only gently tapped the end of the box, as i have done countless times over the past 2 years, i never hold pressure when it is bottomed out, and i never let it squeal for more than an instant. I believe the pressure popped the end off the box.

Do ya'll know anything about the Tomken Machine saginaw box brace?? It envolpes the end cap, and braces it to the frame rail. Will one of these prevent the cap from popping off again??

Thanks-

I got rid of my AGR box because 1- everyone that I had failed in some way. 2- they are only a 90 day warentee. That sucks. I went to Schucks and got a lifetime warentee box for like $120 bucks. It was the wagoneer box. Look and see what input and output splines you have then we can tell what box it is.

What exact mods did you do to the pump? I know there are a couple levels, so how far did you go? I am planning on doing this mod and would like to know how far to push it.

I added 2 #4 washers to the valve, but did not remaove the orig. shim. I would suggest removing the shim, or adding 1 washer. I talked to Fort Collins 4x4, and they said the people at AGR are very helpful, so maybe they will refurb. the box for me?? Also, the box had a 1 year warranty, which is now up. What do you all think about just tapping the cap back into place, and welding it up??

So you have been bottoming out the box for a while now huh.. It really does not surprise me that it finally gave up. The caps are removable. Generally they have a retaining clip holding them on. Not positive that the AGR box has that but you should be able to see if it does.

The box that AGR uses is just a Jeep J20 box. Kinda hard to find but worth it if you are actually goign to replace those baby tires on the cruiser :flipoff2:

I have heard of more people getting screwed by AGR than helped. So good luck.

Oh yeah, install some bumpstops :D

maybe you should just get rid of your :rainbow: steering and go full hydro. The only thing you will have to worry about then is everything else!!!!!! HAAAA!!!

your :rainbow: elf cruiser

and I quote "maybe if I focus in on this agr box you wont be able to tell what a piece of shit the rest of this thing is"

or how about this quote "my truck hasnt broken yet"

welcome to the world of modification.

It sucks but theres no going back

P.S. Swamper502 is really :rainbow: :rainbow: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Really? Well then, that J20 I parted out and kept the box may just be a good thing after all :)

In case anyone cares-

AGR agreed to take my box back, and refurbish it for $50. I am also having them replace the pot metal end cap, with the newer billet aluminum style for an additional $25. I figure this is the best solution for now. I will also pull one of the washers back out of the pump. what a shame, it worked soooo goooood...

Hmmm.... so you upped the pressure, and regularly hit the boxes limits (before hitting your steering stops)... and AGR is warrantying it?

Did you share these details with them?

If so, they are really going above and beyond the call of duty, IMHO.

Of course i didn't share the details with them, but its not a warranty claim. The warranty is 90 days free replacement, and i bought it a year and a half ago. They will refurb. any of their old boxes for $50. They were also extremely helpful, and knowledgeable on the phone.

BTW - the guy said that the AGR superpump puts out about 1500psi. He said they use stock saginaw casting, with internal modifications (basically same as TheLakeRat's page). So if they are not cracking, then the mods that i did must have gone above 1500 psi. Any one have an idea what the saginaw pump mod would create?

TheLakeRat - have you ever put a pressure guage on one of your systems??? what do you think???

elf cruiser, why on earth would you talk to Fort Collins 4x4 about steering, or anything for that matter?
May be off topic, but they suck, have gotten real bad since that Boulder shop bought them.
Anyway.

Slagburn, i happened to be in Ft. Collins randomly, and they had the best price out of antone i had talked to; $275 shipped to me in Waco. Didn't have them do any work, just get me the AGR box...

Hmm. Chalk that one up to random coincidences I guess?! Their prices have gone through the roof lately. Anyway, this has nothing to do with the subject. I shut up now. :D
