: TJ People
Kensoffroad 10-02-2001, 08:08 PM Ok I got a really stupid question for you TJ people so don't give me crap about it.
I have 00 TJ I was asked to go with a 3 to 4in suspenion lift for now. Ok here is my question what is the tallest I can go before I have to start changing stuff.
Any help I can get would be great. Thanks
changing what kind of stuff?
SwampTJ 10-02-2001, 08:26 PM I'd say 3", after that you may need a sye and maybe an axle upgrade along with gears, then add lockers, next up a winch then your current tires are to small...Then you find out it doesn't stop it just repeats.
boneman 10-02-2001, 08:37 PM Personnaly I would not go taller than 2" without changing something. If you go 3"--you need to at least get larger rubber...the small tires can be used, but the looks are goofy and you start getting into stability problems. If you go 4"--you will definitely need larger meats and if you run a transfer case drop you can survive, but I would get the shortshaft kit which solves any driveline vibration you might get from the lift.
If you are talking no change, as to shocks and everything...go no further than the 1 3/4 spring spacers...they are cheap and absolutely nothing needs to be changed. Anything above that and something will have to be done, whether it be shocks, drop pitman arm, bigger rubber, etc, etc, etc...the list is endless of course.
Final advice if you want to lift...
Save your money and get what you want the first time...it will be worth it in the long run.

I was wondering about the SYE. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do it right away. Already getting the winch maybe this weekend!

Between a motor lift, transfer case drop(never liked that idea) & adjustable control arms you might not need one. Won't know until you try. I always thought the cut off point for a sye was between 2-3" of lift.
Landon 10-02-2001, 09:32 PM I have a a TJ with 3 inch suspension lift and tried lowering t-case and adjustable arms, didn't help. I had to go with the SYE and CV drive shaft in the end.
Drunk Guy 10-02-2001, 09:38 PM i have a 4 in lift on my tj and I had to use the SYE and a CV drive line. Its a must and not that bad on price about $150 for the RE I think that is about what I paid for mine.
XtrmTJ 10-02-2001, 09:47 PM I,ld say 2, 3 tops, b4 ya got to start altering all kinds a stuff !

Drunk Guy 10-02-2001, 10:34 PM again what are you planing on doing with your tj. some of the lifts out there that are 2" don't even rase it much at all. A friend of mine put the pro comp 2" on his tj and it ended up being about 1" higher than stock, all that money and nothing to show from it. If you are going to lift it, you might as well go 4" or more. Some good lifts for that would be the Teraflex and the RE.

COIL SPACERS would werk wonders for more meat! 1-3/4" spacers would do what you want and maybe a small body lift 1-2"? (I know ) but hell its a cheap lift. Less fussing w/ driveline stuff till you can afford to do it right. Just an idea Dont EVEN think about flaming back I am trying to help and this isnt my thread. Fawk I dont even know what a TJ is.
rokryder 10-03-2001, 12:12 PM Don't waste you're money with the 2" lift. You're going to have to do shocks with a 2" and you dont get anything out of it. Do at least a 4" lift. The 4" will require drop pitman arm and cv joint driveline. And you can still use the stock arms and you can fit 33X12.5's. You can fit 33X10.5's with a 2.5 suspension lift and 1" body lift. 33x9.5's with just the 2.5" lift (no rub with stock wheels - minor rub with the $40 summit 7" rims with max offset. I dont recommend the pizza cutters. That's what I have & they arent't for rock crawling.
lotafunjeepin' 10-03-2001, 01:55 PM I have a Teraflex 4" lift on a '99 TJ. Ran out of cash for the SYE, so I dropped the t-case. Saved the money, but lost 1.5" of clearance. Ultimately, the skid plate got so dented that the t-case pushed up and I got terrible driveline vibes. Took the plate off, flattened it, vibes gone. Next mod for me: SYE.
Flatty 10-03-2001, 02:02 PM Chicky, do the 4" lift from RE, and be done with it. Do it right the frist time. As for it leading to a winch and other things, I say save your money for a lift with tires and gears. Forget the winch, it is not a necessity until you start doing trails that are impassible. Get the RE lift with some 35's, and call it a day.

BabyWrangle 10-03-2001, 04:39 PM My advice would be exactly what some others have said. Do it right (the way you want it) the first time because it will save you money in the end. I could have saved myself a few thousand bucks by getting mine exactly how I wanted right from the start. If you want a 4" and 33s and think thats the biggest you will ever go, then do that from the start. It probably won't be the end of your suspension/tire mods but at least that will be a good start. If you're really going to wheel it go with a RE longarm kit with 35s and gears/lockers of your choice. If its just for looks dont spend the cash on the longarm kit, just get 4" coils and spacers. Whatever you do you will have to get a SYE so be prepared for it. And one other thing...if you can't do the work yourself, find a friend that can because that will save you tons of cash that can be used for other mods.
Kensoffroad 10-03-2001, 05:11 PM Was thinking about going with RE. I am just trying to get the height right the first time. My xj was lifted 3x & has all the extras on it. Was told that all I should need is 3-4" of lift for my tj. Winch is coming off my xj & on to my tj. Xj is out of commision until major body mods, & axle work is completed. Thanks for your help!
Drunk Guy 10-03-2001, 06:19 PM I run the teraflex 4 in kit and the kit comes with everything that you will need jsut about. You will need to get a SYE kit and the CV drive line and shocks. I got all this for about $1400 to $1500. I run the RE SYE and dirve line. My shocks are the rancho rs9000. I gave me 4.75" true lifs right after i put it on and saged down to about 4.5". I run 33 12.5 BFG mud but you can run 35 12.5 with the right offset rim. the only bad thing I can say about the teraflex setup is the control arms like to come loose after a off road trip. but you just get under and tighten it all up and it will be all good untill the next time. If you want more info on the lift go to www.teraflx.com (http://www.teraflx.com) and it will show you all of what the kit comes with. Again I love this setup. After you use it for a while and you endup wanting more lift you can add the teraflex 1.75" sping spacers and you should be able to clear 36" tires.
swampintj 10-03-2001, 06:30 PM TJChicky,
I'll probably get a lot of flack for this but BFD! The 4inch lift, sye, lockers, etc. is what you'll need to do serious rockcrawlin, no question about it. But that being said, you can still do a hell of a lot of brutal trails without all of that stuff.
I'm just runnin' 31 TSL's, .75 spacers, skids for the power steering, engine, gas tank, rockers, The factory Trac-loc, and a 9000 pound winch. I can't go on insane rockcrawling trails, but everything else is fair game. The jeep has survived level 4 trails at Paragon and logged lots of miles in swamps and trails all around the Northeast. My .02 is to skidplate the hell out of it, protect what you've got, and then wheel the livin' piss out of it first. Then when you've maxed out how far you can go with that setup you'll know exactly how high you want to lift it, what size tires, etc. It'll also give you time to save up for all the other stuff while your still out there wheelin! Later...
moveaside 06-21-2002, 07:47 PM If your not going to wheel it than don't lift it. But if you are everyone regrets the 3" or less do at least the four. If you lift it and wheel it you'll be doing more to that jeep than SYE and CV driveshaft trust me. So bite the bullet now it will hurt less and definitely do the SYE and CV driveshaft a transfer case drop can cause shifting issues and for me caused my 2nd gear to pop on without notice on the trail for the month I had it that way

coiledcj7 06-22-2002, 10:12 PM i got a 99 tj with a 3 inch teraflex w/ rs9000. the rs9000's made a HUGE differance withthe rough ride. I fully recomend. I have 33X12.50's on it and you need the 3 3/4 back spaced rims or you WILL rub. you should listen to the people above my commit and save you flow for something you really want. I've done
3 different lifts on my 85 cj-7 and I'm still not happy with my flex. But if I saved my dough once and for all I could have done what I want right.
