have a 88yj 2.5 that needs some more power. friend has a 83 grand wagoneer limited with running motor and 727 tranny, body is rusted. low 100k miles, but it was a beach truck.
would this be a good donor for my yj? tranny, t case, axles, etc....?
anybody know the stock specs for the jeep? it's a 83 grand wagoneer 360 auto.

83 has some of the following 360,tf727,now tcases depends...
one way to tell if its a good one is hubs on the front axle, then it should be a 208...but they also came with 219,207,228,229...most suck bad except the 207 208

an input swap on your 231 will get it working with the 727. You just need the 23 spline input. Up front you'll have a d44. Check the cover. If it has a bunch of weird shit on it, then stay away. Rear is going to be an AMC 20 (HD version). Good setup if it's not the vac-disco front axle.

It'll probably be fine to swap everything except the tcase (unless it's a 208). Even the vac-disconnect D44 probably won't be any worse than your vac-disconnect D30.

Pretty close. Takes some grinding and such, but nothing too difficult. I did a writeup over on jeeps-offroad.com that would be very helpful if you want to stay spring under. If you want to go spring over, keith strong did a great writeup at RPS.com.

If you live in an "emissions critical" location, you often have regulatory issues if you swap OLDER drivetrains into a NEWER vehicle.
I don't know where you live, or if you keep your rig street legal. But you might want to check into that if you are somewhere that looks at those kinds of things.
Otherwise the tech of this question might be moot.

I did the waggy 44 swap also from a 84. I would of done the drive train buy my laws said i couldnt. Its a good setup. Check out jegs.com. they have all kind of upgrade stuff for that angine and trans. I have even seen people put chevy throttle body on the AMC 360. Worked great.
