January 2006 Dirt Sports.. Nice Article about W.E. Rock Grand Nationals. ~7 pages, nice photos, good discussion about the W.E. Rock Courses and idea. Well done, well written (I think) and shows W.E. Rock in a great light. ALso talks about potential for the sport...

Thanks for the head's up...we need to keep these type of posts coming so even if teams don't subscribe, they can know that they were in an article.

The WE Rock Grand Nationals were sure kickass...bummer it was wet!

Don't get down about it. We got 2nd in Supercrawl III and didn't get in any magazines. Consistency is the key. Keep doing well and stay in front of the camera. Introduce yourself to the guy behind the camera, give him your card, maybe offer to send him pictures. As far as I am concerned, media wants 50% a cast of characters for folks to follow and 50% cool shots, new ideas, new faces, etc.

Glad to see WE-ROCK getting some coverage! There was even a positive editorial about the off-road industry in general. My favorite is the section with news about the teams! :grinpimp:

That magazine goes out to a lot of people so anything about rockcrawling is a win for us!

Sorry guys, we try to get the media to cover the events. Once their there, what they cover and how they cover it, is up to them. We try and influence, by asking their angle, but it's still their choice of who gets in and why. Go big when you see the cameras on you:D

Knowing that this is our first year running a complete series it was hard to get the media to cover a somewhat unknown team. We worked hard to place in the top 10 of the series and having some top 5 days thinking that would help but I guess we needed to roll and have major carnage to get coverage.:D Well theirs always next year.

That's one way Rick, but I got some ideas you might want to try. First off, introduce yourseft to anyone with a media pass. Have team info sheets, or hero cards ready to pass out to media.

If they know you and like you, it might help. And being that you and Rick G. are always smiling, that can't hurt.

Rick G's the Pimp man. After every course he's always talking with the female spectators, asking them how they like his comp style and if they understand how the backstage passes work ect.ect. He's great for being a man-hoe....:grinpimp:
Fixed it.

Rick, it's a little luck, a little lovin, a lot of networking, and a little more luck involved in getting into the story or photos. Keep at it and you'll get there.

I haven't seen it yet, but I know there's a big printing house in Boulder that does a lot of the other mags' printing and mailing. So sometimes us Colorado folks get our magazines faster (depending on the post office in town, too).

Carnage and roll shots are not used too often if you really pay attention. All this below is just my personal style and opinion but I bet a lot of other photographers are like this. Personally like to show the cool stuff a rig can do instead of what it couldn't for the most part. Unless there is something about the shots that is especially cool and different or if it was pivotal for the standings, like Torbetts roll in the finals in the main event, I usually don't bother with them. Really getting covered is based most on luck of the photographer getting good shots of your rig, on obstacles that give interesting pictures. The more you get follwed around increases those chances. Having the luck of getting placed in a group with other top guys helps get and keep the photographers around. Placing higher (besides maybe first place) really doesn't increase your chance of getting shots in there in itself, what it does do is increase your chances of getting followed around more the next event, or possibly the next day, and having that photographer get more shots overall of you, and hopefully get those printworthy shots eventually. Even if you place pretty high, a magazine doesn't usally want to print a boring shot of you over a interesting or eye catching shot of a guy who placed a few spots down.

If you have a hard time getting media around you, talk to them. If they don't know who you are let them know you have been placing well, and that will increase the chances of them following you around, waiting for you to run, or making sure they get more shots of you. Besides that make sure you have a photogenic rig. Even if you are a person who doesn't place well this will go a long way. Ugly, beat up and/or no body panels isn't going to help get photographers following it, get printworthy pictures of it, or help the pictures of it stand out.

^ Listen to this guy, he is one of our star photogs. When we choose photos there are only a few criteria that go into our choices:

1. Making sure we have a broad range of rigs, not the same rigs in ten pics but getting as many teams in there as possible. Dustin Webster already gets too much play :flipoff2:

2. Shots that are exciting and fit well in our layout. This is just luck and colors, lighting etc. These are more photographic an not due to the driver.

3. Sponsor logos. We are here to promote the sport and make money doing it. If I can run a shot of a crawler with a huge Superior decal down the side, that will help me sell an ad to Superior later so we do think in these terms. We know how important it is to get your sponsors in the pics so we try very hard.

4. Get to know the photogs and editors. If it is down to two photos and one is our buddy that we had a few beers with last event, we will probably choose his rig. Homie hookup.

Yeah I don't know what's going on there with Primedia and Poison Spyder. It could be as simple as friends hooking up friends, we are overtly friends with certain companies / people like Larry at Mad4WD, Dave at Northridge4x4 or Dan at BlueTorch (see, I just pimped them) :grinpimp: and we take care of them and they help us out. There is nothing wrong that with, but it may be deeper, who knows. I will be talking to Clifton here soon so we'll see how he views working with CRAWL. We're small but drilling hard into this niche so it is a good fit.

Dustin, you doing PUSU mang?
