: Spicer 18 X-Case Removal Help
Desert Jeepin 03-23-2002, 05:42 PM Ok, so thinking it was like my YJ, I unbolted it and started to pull. No go.. Hmmm I though. So I busted out the book...
Turns out there is a Nut on the output shaft of the 3spd. Tranny and that it's cotter pinned (already removed). I can't get the nut to loosen (I refuse to say nut off).
Does any one know any tricks to removal of teh nut on the output shaft of teh transmission? Or how about any tricks to removal of the whole thing in general?
Also, I can't get the pivot pin for the 2 Levers out. It is supposed to exit away from teh transmission right? There isn't enough room for it to exit towards the tranny, and there is a grease zirk on the outside end. I think it's just frozen in place because I removed the set screw, but it (the whole pin) wont budge. I pulled the zirk and fulled the cavaty with some penatrating spray to see if it will help.
Thanks!!!!

Desert Jeepin 03-23-2002, 06:09 PM Done...
But I still need help getting my nut off.
CJ-Jeeper 03-23-2002, 07:37 PM Are you useing an impact gun on that nut?
As for the shifter pin, I cut a hole through the body so I could pull it out. Don't know why it's so hard to break loose. Did you try spinning it useing the little nut on the zerk? If you can spin it, you should be able to work it out.
Desert Jeepin 03-23-2002, 08:09 PM How in the hell would I use an impact????
The nut is larger than 1.25" and is IN the trans case. I can't get anything on it other than a combo. And even then there won't be a whole lot of movement.
As for the Pivot Pin. I can't get it to spin. I can't get it to budge.

Thanks.
CJ-Jeeper 03-23-2002, 08:52 PM I guess i'm not pictureing this right. I could have sworn that on my buddys '71 he just takes the rear cover off & it's a stright shot in to the nut & he just uses a big socket w/ extension.
My gear easily fits through the hole, so I don't have that problem.
Just tossing ideas hopeing something will help, since You're not getting anything from anyone else.
The only other thing I can think of for the pin ismaybe once you get the gear off you can drop the case enough to work on it better. Or just drop it out w/ the levers on. I'll assume that you sprayed lube on the otside of the pin & in the set screw hole.
Good luck
On the shifter pin there is two little anti-rattle clips (they kinda fork down between the shift levers.. they can sometimes get caught on the notch in the pin...
I usually just grab the little end that sticks out with some vice grips and spin the pin around then yank it out
As for the big nut on the tranny mainshaft. 1 5/16 socket ,extension and an impact... noi problem
Just pulled a D18 off an SM420 yesterday. As was said, take the rear tin cover off, impact wrench with extension (34MM or 1-5/16" socket), comes right off. Be sure the trannie is in low gear. Sometimes the main drive gear in front of the nut, which must be removed, needs to be coaxed off with a puller, if it's real tight like mine was. Be careful not to screw up the seal on the main shaft from the trannie side. This was a Novak adapted trans/t.case set up on an FJ60.

Desert Jeepin 03-23-2002, 11:44 PM Ok. Maybe I'm the one missing something.
But first, it's not a D18, it's a spicer. The Dana is Different. Or so I'm told.
1 5/16" figures, cause I only have up to 1.25". Grr, something more I need.
Ok, so Reading the text instructions that I have, it said to pull teh drain pan. I wasn't smart enough to think PTO cover, which I presume you gys keep talong about. Because there is no way to fit an impact through the hole between the gears through the drain pan area. Now I gotta go look at the tcase again.
Thanks for all the help. I'll get this thing off yet. It's just frustrating because I had the one off my YJ in like 15min.

Spicer, Dana, all the same as far as I've seen. The one I pulled says Spicer/Dana Model 18. There were differing spline count though. the one I removed was a 6 spline. The rear flat inspection cover is what you need to take off, not the pan with the drain plug. It's not a PTO cover either. It has 6 bolts in a more-or-less round configuration directly to the rear of the main shaft of the trans. This is the location that overdrives like Warn or Borg Warner connect

Desert Jeepin 03-24-2002, 12:23 AM You see, this is what you get when computer nerds do their own mech work...
Thanks for the help guys. In the morning it's round 3, going for the TKO.
