: Another idea I didn't want -Zuk bod on toy frame

OK, so I'm out looking at my junk today. Thinking man, I wish the Zuk had the same wheelbase as the Toy shortbed axle donor. Also thinking the toy spring mounts and such would make a good prototype for the Wrangler spring swap, since length is the same and it is already a rear-schackle setup. Already have the springs and bought steel for the brackets. A Buddy came up with a cheap 4.3, too bad you can't buy off-the-shelf motor mounts for a 4.3 in the Zuk frame, etc.. I want dual toy cases, it would be nice if the Toy crossmember fit the zuk. Gonna tube the front and lose the zuk body from the wheelwells back anyway......

Soooo - why not just put the Zuk body on the Toy frame and call it good? Anyone done this? Talk me out of it before I do something stupid.

I don't know anybody personally that has done it but I do recall a kick ass looking Zuk that was all toyota from the fram up with a Sammi body on top. Damn it was cool. A guy in FL I think. I'll try to find the pic.

i saw one on this board awhile back, search and you might find it. it was sweet, the rear frame stuck out abut 4 feet, and it was a hard top sami, so it looked kinda funny. cept it was on something like 38s, so it looked sweet.

Hey Seabass - any chance of getting pics of the engine compartment? Also a pic of where the shifter comes up in the tunnel. Thinking that I have the shifter in the rear and the dist in the front to determine the fore/aft placement of the drivetrain.

Thanks

Brian

remember this is a 4.3L and sm420 to dual toy cases, and it's a 1982 sj410, which I've been told is the same as a sammie, looks like my 86......floor and tunnle don't at all though, also the heatrer and core are not there, I don't have them yet.hope it helps, any questions just ask, I can take more pics and or measure anything u want too;) allways happy to help out a fellow wheeler!

Thanks for the quick reply. Funny you mention the heater not being there - I was thinking that would be an issue with the shifter location. Looks sweet. Gotta get more parts!

Dude you should totally do that, except cut off the rear after the seats and do a tubing flatbed style rear. I saw one like that on I believe allprooffroad under the pictures for the ARCA rock crawling champ feb 2k It was also for a land cruiser I think.

Nope,it is not on the frame yet.I have just started this project two weeks ago.I have just finished the stripping of the frame and the rear suspension is almost done.Hopefully by next week the suspension part will be finished less the shocks.I will pick those up at the Indiana fab Fest.I will try to post some pics as soon as that part is done.Rear springs inboarded to same width as the front.19"drop links in the back,10" drop links in the front, toy springs all around.I can't wait to be able to put tires on it to see somewhat how it will stand.:usa:

Man, I'm gonna get some flack on this one but here it goes out to some of the comments:

Why the he** would you put a sam body on the toy frame then turn the sam into a tube bed pu? Really now with the bed there won't be any weight savings! Plus it's not really any narrower for fitting places.

Those toys are getting pretty rare around where I live and can be a decent rig on their own. I don't see how putting a slightly smaller cab on it would help. Just tube the friggin toy cab! It already has the right body mounts!

The only reason to do it would be the H.O.F., thats the hard on factor.

Oh and to save yall the time! :flipoff2: to myself "ya fawkin' newbie!"

No flack - good points. Main reason is the Toy is too damn small. Also want flat sides for easier bed fab and a removable/fold down windshield. Otherwise your comments are right on - that's why I bought the truck in the first place, but after sitting in it for a while I just can't see it.

This is with the seat allllll the way against the back of the cab; going higher puts my eye line right in the top of the windshield frame. Can't see spending all day on the trail pretzeled in like that, and the fab to raise it.... ehhh.

and you are telling us that you would fit in a zuk better.......damn stretch!!! i guess you can fab seat mounts to go as far back as you want on a zuk though?!?:smokin: :D

Hey SeaBass, how are those Toy springs working? I was told from some people on this board that the Toy springs would be too stiff and Jeep springs would be much better. Thing is, I have Toy springs on the porch! I have front and rear springs from an '83, would you run Toy springs again? Also, why did you use the rear springs instead of fronts? Aren't they quite a bit stiffer than the fronts? And did you do a s/r when you mounted them? Do you need an anti-wrap device with those springs? Thanks in advance! I'm looking for something stronger than my Zuk springs cause they just aren't holding up. My right rear spring wraps up, then just completely fails and then I roll over.

rear are softer
Yota miniT fronts ~ 300lbs per inch
Yota miniT rears ~ 160lbs per inch

yes I would use them again, they flex like a mad dog, no wrap and no wrap bar needed, rears with an extra leaf all the way around

*folding/removable windshield as mentioned, more fore and aft room to play with-being able to recline your seats even a LITTLE bit is absolutely crucial (for me anyways) PLUS- easily removable doors, SOFT TOP, etc etc *

I would say go for it as well.

Except.... If that zuk is in as good of shape as it looks, I wouldnt use that body. I would find a donor somewhere that had a good body, but missing alot of the driveline/engine/tranny/t case etc. and go that route. Then you would still have your little zuk to enjoy as well.
