but here we go...

i got some 406 axles from canada and had exaxt do the pinion conversions and give me disc conversions parts. rear is already in the truck and ill show the picks below. went in under the stock leaf springs. the front is still in the works and will be triangulated 4 link with full hydro steering from station.

we can start with the axles as i got them. kinda dirty, and i got a penny in there for size comparison. these things are beefy. had them blasted and painted with some super tough paint that is tough to get off even with a grinder. also a pic with the pinion conversion on from exaxt. they made these as short as they possibly could, and they are nice. they also have a 3rd bearing in there for extra pinion support.

to get the rear in with the leaf springs, i had to make a new perch because no one sells any for the axle tube diameter of these things (4.125") plus i wanted some beefier perches. 3/8" steel. the spring plate is of 1/2" and is all held together with 3/4" ubolts.

first a little insight to how my name came about, plus how not to weld.

a shot that my girlfriend got while welding that we really like. which later became my avatar. :D
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=218227&stc=1&d=1133991154

the perch in my hand, and on the axle.

then someone stole my rear axle out from under my truck.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=218228&stc=1&d=1133991313

or was it my new axle?

and now my tires are a little wide. until i get the front in, then ill get these hawgs worn down and go with some 46" michelins.

after the axles are in, ill need to work on some sort of gas tank skid.

onto the progress so far of the front axle. ive got the bridge built for the cylinder. notched out the mounts that i got from station to fit the tubes on my bridge. the main outer tube is 1.5" with 1.75" sleeved over it. i think both tubes are .120 wall. the other piece is just 1.5".

we figured that these things are so beefy, i most likely wont need to split the case, but in the event that i do, ill cut the tubes and weld in flanges at that point in time.

also, i am using the stock arms that we heated to 1250* in order to bend them under a huge press. the first one had some surface cracks show during the bending process because we only had it heated to about 1100 (dull red). so we got the other one glowing and it went good. even at that temp though, these freakin arms were tough to bend. i was practically hanging from the end of the bar and i weigh 210 lbs.

ya those are the arms im talking about. i dont have pics of them, but i might be able to take some soon if i can remember. i would definately not call this setup a high steer. the angles are a little bit steep going from the cylinder to the arms, but i think they will work. (fingers crossed). i just got done clearencing the clevises that station provides because they were binding my heims.

You are more apt to have to replace the oring for the locker than repair something broken. Lot of work for a $15 part.

BTW, nice work.

the rear leaf springs are so stiff from the factory and with the aal in there, i get very little axle wrap at all. i thought i could feel some driving, but me and a buddy checked it out against a wall and couldnt get any wrap to show.

Wow, I have been so busy with work I did not realize how much time had passed. I have also been living in an apartment for the last 4 years and that really puts a damper on things.

The front end is in, with a double-tri four link. I have taken it out a couple times, and found that my steering design needs a bit more reinforcement. I need to find all the pics and post them up.

you do realise that you spelled Hawaii wrong, dont you? :flipoff2:

whats the plan for this truck? Its looks pretty stock other than the axles and big tires, so why the axle swap, high ground clearance, etc?
