: Sammi vs. Track/Kick
Fresh469 12-09-2005, 02:25 PM ok, im gong to be getting my FIRST 4x4 soon :D and was wonder which would be better? Sammi or Track/Kick.
either would end up with Yota or D44 axles.
Pros of Track/Kick:
-1.6
-little bigger (i am a big guy)
-longer wheelbase
-power steering
-looks better IMO
cons of Track/Kick:
-IFS stock (gonna need a SAS before its very capable)
-eh, thats bout all i can think of....
Pros of Sammi:
-SAS from the factory, so doing the yota axles or d44 axles would just mean moving the springs and/or mounts
-lighter
Cons of Sammi:
-Smaller (again, i am a big guy)
-low power
-no power steering
whats everyones opinion on this?
Myanarchy 12-09-2005, 02:30 PM I think you should get a jeep and forget all this samurai nonsense
Fresh469 12-09-2005, 02:38 PM jeeps are completely out of the question....they simply cost to much to get. :(

I'd say go for the tracker if you are a bigger guy...Throw some Dana 44s under there and have at er. I am 5'11" and Am just the right size for my sami, seen guys probably 6" taller than me that could barely get into the thing. Only thing I would say is the Trackick PS is moot (sp?) point...put much larger than 31s or 33s on there and it will be pretty wimpy.
Fresh469 12-09-2005, 03:02 PM i wasn't talking about being a big guy hieght wise....little big around the belly :grinpimp:

Then you'll need to look at something with 1 ton springs

bigbluezuk 12-10-2005, 10:10 PM I have a sami. i love it, goes everywhere. Great 4x4, good as a daily driver too. Im currently looking for a sidekick, gonna see how that is. I think once i got the yota axels and coils it will be much better than my sami. also with the power steering and a heater it will be a more comfortable ride
RockMolester 12-10-2005, 10:19 PM It is not at all a problem for a big guy to fit behind the wheel of a Samurai, or in the front passenger seat of an 87+ Samurai with the longer seat tracks. I'm 6'3" 275lbs and drove Samurais for a decade. All my height is in my torso, and I still had miles of headroom. I even fit comfortably in the passenger seat of my roommate's 86 Sami. Honestly, I am much more comfortable and have much more room than in my folks Grand Cherokee or in my Honda Civic. The only other vehicles I've been as comfortable in are my FJ60 Land Cruiser and my 85 4Runner. I'm in the process of replacing my Honda with a 4-door Sidekick as my daily driver, because it too is one of the few vehicles with a tall enough front seating area that I can have the seat sufficiently vertical without my head banging into the roof over bumps.
Fresh469 12-11-2005, 04:48 PM ok, so the general opinion is to go with a Sammi?
what if i decided to keep the axles in a Sammi stock and trussed them and put the TT "double tough" front axles in, would they hold up to 31x12.5 boggers?
but what if i went with a Tracker? how much wider than Tracker axles would Toyota axles be?
DirtJumper 12-11-2005, 05:15 PM Stock axles should hold up to 31s...truss them if you jump the thing ;), s'about it. If you get a tracker, I believe the yota axles are 1-2" wider than trackicks.

dont plan on it, but u never know :grinpimp:

really? in that case, i might get a tracker...i was thinking they were 3-4 inches wider, if its only 1-2", i could pretty much make up for that width by runningwheels with different backspacing to bring it back to the same width...
Dihnekis 12-11-2005, 07:34 PM Stock samurai axles can handle 33"s, especially if you are easy on the skinny pedal. Get birfield rings up front, and don't lock the front and you wont have any breakage. Right now I've got 31x10.5s, no problems at all. I'm putting the 1.6 from my tracker in it, very easy swap and you get the power of a trackick. With that said, I have had both a tracker and a samurai. The tracker is a lot more comfortable as a DD, but the samurai is a lot more capable off road. I prefer my samurai, mostly because I don't drive very far and it looks badass. Plus doors off and top down is fun in the summer.
bigbluezuk 12-11-2005, 10:14 PM im running 33 by 12.5 mt/r's when i was locked front only i broke an axel shaft, but i was being stupid. now that im locked front and rear and dont drive like a retard i havent had any problems.
Gotta love 33's, locked front and no power steering

You may want to verify this with someone, but I believe the tracker rear is 4" wider than a sami rear and a toy rear is 5 or so in wider...there be my reasoning.
Bobzooki 12-12-2005, 07:52 AM Yeah, those IFS Track/Kick's are not very off-road capable. They can barely clear the curb... Better stick with a Sammi. Unless you want the more comfortable ride of the Cadillac of the Suzuki's of the 90's.
But hell, you prolly can't even take a Track/Kick off-road.

Which Yota axles? Because Toy Minitruck axles are actually about 2" narrower.

I'm still running the stock box with 35's.
Fresh469 12-12-2005, 09:11 AM heather, what is the backspacing on your wheels? i like the width on your 'kick :grinpimp:
hcgalvin 12-12-2005, 09:14 AM heather, what is the backspacing on your wheels? i like the width on your 'kick :grinpimp:
Um.. Stock Mid Offset Chevy backspacing, as the tire shop goes by Chevy when you want 6 x 5.5 wheels. :P
I still wish they were wider.
:)
Fresh469 12-12-2005, 09:56 AM anyone know ABOUT how much lift stock Sammi rear springs would give (SPOA) on a track/kick?
DirtJumper 12-12-2005, 10:01 AM Ok...for the axles sami measure 51.6", toys are 55" (mini truck) I have only read that the trackick are 4" wider than sami axles, so assuming I was given the right info, they are 0.6" narrower. My bad. if you would like a wider stance (at least for a rear axle) you can use a later post-86 8" and they are about 58" wide...but good luck finding a front :flipoff2:
As for PS, I said it was moot(sp?) point. Some do fine with it, some bitch about it.

I thought that Sammies were 53.5. If they're 51.5-6 then there is a heck of a difference. A sidekick is ~ 57.5".
See, this is why I went FJ80.
:)
DirtJumper 12-12-2005, 10:30 AM The FJ axles are nice...rare, but nice...offset diff would be great!
I guess it depends who measured ::) I believe all the measurements I have were taken at the same places though.
hcgalvin 12-12-2005, 11:35 AM I'll throw in a couple pics for good measure. When we first made a custom front end using a sidekick rear, we cut down one side and then we put on Sammy knuckles using OTT chromoly axles and double tough birfs. We sat it next to a stock sammy front for a look at the difference in length to make it the same track width. This is right after we cut to length.

About the same as putting CJ-5 leafs under a TJ... :shaking:
Fresh469 12-13-2005, 10:00 AM ok, excuse me for being a newb!
WTF man, offer a little help at least instead of being a smart ass. trying to get my first 4x4 and trying to get help and make sure i get what is best for me.

Sorry for offending you. Some of us think nothing of putting leafs under a Track/Kick (Hi Heather!), while others are "coil purists", and think it's a step backwards. It's DEFINITELY a matter of opinion. So don't get all butt-hurt, just because I made a joke about putting leafs under a Track/Kick.
Fresh469 12-13-2005, 11:36 AM haha
nah, not butthurt, just want to have the easiest install possible to get going....coils might come later on down the road though ;)
i would keep a coil setup in the back, but with longer links (axle in stock position, just move the link mounts on the frame) and longer coils.
im not looking to build a rock crawler, it will mostly be used for mud, water (creeks/shallow rivers), hills, and just casual trails
