I heard that the 4 cyl np231 was different than the I6, I know about he 21 to 23 spline in the early 90s, any other differences?

other than xj, tj and yj, did the full size gran cherokee also share this TC? all the same?

spline count is the difference, all depending on what xmsn was being used.

As stated the input gear can be 21 or 23 spline. It also can be 1 of 3 lengths, short, medium (rare) and long.

X2. I have been able to put TJ 231's on YJ's. not a problem with the front output being longer or shorter. If you are swapping a broken 231 you can in most cases use your front output on the new one being swapped in.

6 cyl 4.0 with 5 speed had 23 spline

some 6 cyl 4.0 with auto (i.e. XJ's), had 21 spline

6 cyl 4.2 all had 21 spline (after the peugeout tranny)
