: TBI350/700R4/NP241 in our 800!
mlogan24 03-24-2002, 04:10 PM Thanks to everyone who responded on my post about rebuilding the 304. After carefully reviewing the costs involved and what I stand to gain and lose by going the IH route, I've decided to do a complete 180 and throw in what will basically be the drivetrain from a 89+ Blazer (but using new crate engine, aftermarket rebuilt 700r4, junkyard 241).
Any info on doing this swap is always helpful. BTW-anyone happen to have a pass. side drop NP241 laying around? :D I'll definitely keep you all updated on the swap and will have plenty of pics when done. Hey, sounds like the guy in brown is at the door with my PU tie rod and draglink.
Hey Old Scout! Spotted your disco at Valley Brewery on the Miracle Mile. We were in the big yellow K5.
Scout Dude 03-24-2002, 07:25 PM Sounds cool..but I wouldn't even think of putting the 241 in....Spend the money for an adapter and put in a d300.
ChiScouter 03-24-2002, 08:27 PM I saw 2 blazer right hand 241's in a PNP a few weeks ago in Chicago area, what is the going rate for one out your way? Here is another possible solution. I haven't tried this and have heard from Tcase shops that it might, or does work. 4X Heaven said they are 90 percent it would work, and JB Conversions said probably would, but there might be internal difference. Use a Dodge 241 and get a chevy 27 spline imput. The imputs are under a hundred new. Dodge 241's have a conventional rather than a slip yoke.
mlogan24 03-24-2002, 10:31 PM My thought process on the 241 is as follows. Originally I was gonna do the whole K5 thing with a 208. Then a buddy of mine told me that the 241 had some mechanical improvements over the 208, the lower gearing, and you could change it over to a fixed yoke for relatively cheap bucks (approx $200). The Scout is gonna be my parents rig when they move up to Idaho in a few years, so in all likelihood it won't see a lot of heavy or even mild wheelin, so a chain t-case should be just fine. (of course when I get we're talkin NV4500/Atlas II :D ) I know the d300 rocks, but the going price around here for a 241 is 500-600, which would cost me the same as the 700R4 to d300 adaptor (I'm assuming that I'd have to get an AA adaptor that would cost the normal 450-600, please correct me if I'm wrong) and I'd still have to get a d300 which aren't all that cheap.
I'm definitely gonna have to check out the Dodge 241's. What years and trucks am I looking for to get one of those? I'm assuming its also passenger side drop.
Thanks for the great comments:rasta: :D
BTW-If anyone has a great line on any of these t-cases in Nor. Cal I'm always open to the hookup:beer:
Cliffy [JD] 03-25-2002, 11:07 AM I'll sell ya a TH350 w/205 for $800 *ORO* (not including shipping) ;) It's already on a crate and reay to ship!!!

So the idea is to bolt the Dodge case up to the 700R4? I'm pretty shure the pattern is different. Same 6 bolt round but each manufacturer clockes them different. Could end up with the front output pointed straight up.
I'm not super sure on this one. If I get some time tonight I will try to look it up.
:)
Wouldn't it be easier to use the GM case and change the rear output? Aren't the GM 241's pass drop?
ChiScouter 03-25-2002, 05:41 PM Stupid of me not to mention the clocking, As Scoutaholic suggested the Chevy and Dodge 241's do share the same round 6 bolt pattern, but the clocking is different. They do sell those clocking rings which would might work. I have a chevy 241 adapter laying around, and a Dodge 241 case. I will match them up to see how the clocking would be. It will have to wait for the weekend though. My suggestion on using the dodge setup was based on that they were used with right hand drop from 88 until they went to the new ram design in 94? and they came with the fixed output. They are more plentiful than the Chevy's in the PNP's. Chevy's were only on 88 and 89 Blazers and Subs. I actually like the Chevy case better than the Dodge. The Chevy uses a strut rod to brace the Tcase to the trans like the 203's did. The Dodge cases don't have the holes cast in like the Chevy design and triangulate to the crosmember. Just speculating here but maybe a Dodge yoke would work on the Chevy. I just hate spending the dough on the aftermarket kits if I can find a way around them in the junkyard. As a side note once when I was on the phone with a shop that markets fixed output kits for 231's and 241's I asked the guy what was different between a 208 rear yoke and the 241 stuff. Maybe I pissed him off by asking too many questions or something but he got real huffy with me and wouldn't give me any more info. I never had reason to pursue the matter as I found a Dodge case shortly afterward. Still I wonder if a 208 fixed yoke would work on a Chevy 241. 208's with fixed yokes are found on Fords, Dodges, and some Chevy's from 80 through 88.
One more thing since I am still a newbie. I would like to post some pics of my dual Tcase setup, but am a complete computer illiterate. Can anyone give me some helpful advice?
mlogan24 03-25-2002, 11:07 PM Cliffhanger-Thanks, but we already have the tranny, so I'm just trying to locate a 241.
ChiScouter-Thanks for the great info. I'm definitely gonna have to start taking a look at the Dodge cases. Will the spline counts be different? That reminds me I need to go l check the spline count on the 700R4.
ChiScouter 03-28-2002, 06:57 PM I just checked the Dodge clocking vs the Chevy. If you use a Dodge Tcase on a Chevy adapter (at least the one I had) you will not get any drop, the output of the Dodge Tcase will go straight sideways with no drop. The Dodge has a 23 spline imput, the Chevys have a 27 for the 350/700R4 or a 32 with a 400/4L80E. I have been told but can't confirm that the oututs can be changed between the Chevy's and Dodges.
mlogan24 04-02-2002, 06:12 PM I think I'll stick with the Gm 241, I may have a line on one anyways. I'll keep everyone posted as the swap goes ahead. \
BTW-I just put on my new PU tie rod and draglink-SCHWEET!:)
