Had an eaton in my 1972 3/4 ton when I was younger.Completly destroyed a set of 36" swamperss peeling them off on pavement..Eaton never complained..Also had discs on it. Was a 14 bolt kit from The Street Rod MFG Co..I think you will find this unit very strong...

You can get 3/4 ton caliper brackets, 3/4 ton front 4x4 rotors, pads, and calipers - and BAM! You've got cheap discs :D

I think it was about $150 for everything for my eaton :smokin:

Hey brector! You put discs on your eaton?
I have a eaton I want to put discs on and Ihave everything together except the calliper brackets. Everything else is just 3/4 ton front gear. Did you make your own brakets fro the eaton or use fron brackets or use teh 14 bolt braket kit (I have the blue prints for the 14 bolt brackets) .....

Any help would be cool...........

Yes I did (well - I am in the process of it) and I just used 3/4 ton front 4x4 stuff like you said. I got a set of 3/4 ton brackets from a local 4x4 shop. They have generic 3/4 brackets. I'm not sure if the 14 bolt ones would work - but I think they would. I don't see why they wouldn't if you have some fabbing skills.

Cool. I hope it works out. I think that any 3/4 ton chevy calliper brackets would work out it's just that you have to shim them to line the calliper up with the disc.
The eaton is some huge sucker.. I can't get over the size of it.
Do you know anything about the detroit that they came from the factory with? I hauled the cover off mine but I still can't tell if there is a locker in there, and I don't really want to haul it all apart.
Thanks..

I know that they rock :flipoff2:

Actually - if you saw spider gears - it was open. Do you have the #'s off of the axle? I believe they can tell you if it's got on in it. Maybe I'm crazy though. I'll try to find a pic of an open one, and one w/ a detroit.

This is an open 14 bolt - but you get the idea. If you see spider gears - it's open.

This is a detroit - not the exact model - but close. It replaces the spider gears.

Are there side gears in the axel even if the detroit is in it?
Before I took the axel out of the truck it was in I drove it against a pile of logs and the two rear tires dug into the gravel driveway at teh same time and left some nict ruts...LOL

On True Tracks site it tells you two tests to do to see if the no-spin detroit locker is qworking. The first test involves spinning and holding the wheels to engadge the locker and to dis engadge it. The second test tells you to drive up to a wall and see if both tires dig in.

This is an article I found on it. If you have any more info can you pos tth elinks here of e-mail it to me please.......

Thanks....

brector,
That is not an open 14-bolt. It is a FORMERLY open 14-bolt that has had it's spider gears lincoln locked. :) But yeah, it is pretty much the same thing.

I know - but it got the point across (spider gears).

Where can you get parts for these axles? I've got a couple of these Eaton axles, but never used them.

Usually everything that I've needed I got at NAPA. I always try to business with the mom and pop stores. They always have somebody that has actually been under the hood of a truck, unlike the But Boys and Crapolazone.

LOL!

What application do you give the guys at Napa (I know they came in the rear of 62 to 72 3/4 ton chevys)? To get my bearings, races, and seals - I was going to go to a bearing shop here in town and just give them all the old stuff (has part numbers) and let them get me what I need. If I can get the stuff from Napa - that would save me a drive.

brector has attached this image:"

That tiny little picture that you attached is a Detroit True-Trac.......NOT a Detroit Locker (or Soft Locker.)

For parts just search NAPA online. I'm pretty sure I found some parts to the eaton there. I think I looked up brake parts and got scared because of the price.
If you got to a bearing shop they will be able to match the bearings no problem if they know thier stuff. Usually you can get better bearings for cheaper at the bearing stores.
My buddy got timkens for his cj cheaper at a bearing store that it would have cost for Japaniese bearings of infearior quality..

Yeah - this is what I plan on doing. I pulled all the bearings and races and am going to take them to a bearing shop here in town. Plus I need to take them the 2 seals to see if they have them also.

I've been told you can use a eaton detroit locker in a 14 bolt by changing to the eaton crouse spline axles. And you can use a 14 bolt detroit locker in a eaton by using 14 bolt axles (fine splines). This is hearsay, have never tried doing either but have been told this by someone that should know.

Jonathan M

I know I've heard that you can upgrade the eaton shafts with the fine spline Corp 14 ones by replacing the eaton coarse shafts and side gears with thet ones from a Corp 14. So the interchangability of the locker makes sense. I can't see why not....
Can anyone verify this?

Bingo - that's right!

What do I do now. I have a corp 14 in good shape haven't had time to check the gear ratio. I also have a eaton in good shape also with 4.56 gears. The corp 14 corp has new brakes but the eaton would need to have discs put on it.
I've got two 44 fronts one with closed knuckles and 4.56 gears and the other one is ope with unknown gears. Both axesl are compleate sets 44/eaton and 44/corp 14.
I'm gonna run the newer dana 44 front but what rear would you run?

brector
04-23-2002, 06:36 AM
I would run the eaton. It is stronger than the 14bolt. It was cheap to put the discs on my eaton - like $140 for new calipers, rotors, and pads. Plus I like the eaton because it's a little narrower than the 14bolts, d60's, etc.
