: Sacramento trailer rental

Anyone know where I can rent a 2 vehicle car hauler in the Sacramento area? I want to haul two Toyota rigs, probably weighing 8500 for the rigs and that the trailer will weigh in at about 5000. My 2500 Duramax is rated at 13,500 with gooseneck hitch so I know it will be close to or slightly over max. I assume I should look for a 32 foot gooseneck trailer with a 12K or 15K rating.

I have a 16 foot 10K trailer now that I use for my rig alone and the tow rig has a brake controller and air bags. I will need to add the gooseneck hitch since I bumper pull my trailer.

Two other gooseneck questions: What should I expect the tongue to weigh with the above set up? Also, what is the difference in the fifth wheel vs. gooseneck hitch styles (the ball type vs. the full round plate thing)?

My need involves a single round trip to Moab next year with 2 rigs. Any other comments or advice?

Thanks!!!

Hey Pete, how's things?

Anyway, I can't help on the trailer rental, but maybe I can answer a few other things. The difference on the goose neck vs. fifth wheel systems are that most equipment/livestock type trailers are goose neck. Most RV type trailers are fifth wheel. Considering what you are looking at renting, you will most likely find the trailer will be goose neck style. You can find arguements both ways on which is better. The newer fifth wheel styles come close to matching the benefits of a goose neck. There are several styles of goose neck hitches. I am kind of partial to a couple that use the bed bolts to anchor the side rails and can be set up to use either the goose neck or fifth wheel style hitch. The bonus to those are the convertability and the fact that you are not putting large holes in the bed. Also if you put a cabover camper in, you don't have to compensate for the rails, just remove them.

As far as weight, techically, you will probably be over the gvwr on your 2500. Now as far as your axle/tires are concerned, you should be fine. The limit will be the stock 245's. I'm not sure what the weight rating is on those tires, but I have 265's on my truck and they are rated at 3400lbs single @ 80lbs. Just make sure the trailer is holding the weight and not your truck. Make sure your tonque weight is good, which it should be with a goose neck and happy towing.

Almost forgot, you will love Moab, it is a blast. Have fun.
