: Need help on hydro clutch
Tex1978 12-15-2005, 12:46 PM Ok the 94 YJ has a 304 in it and we just swapped to a NP435/NP205 and now have to fab up the hydro clutch. What have you guys used on this? The YJ still has the stock clutch pedal in it but no master left so I have to buy one anyway. I read somewhere to use a puke-joke master and CJ slave. That is from an 87 YJ and what year model CJ?? Or is there a better alternative?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!

Different app but here is what I did:
1. Wilwood m/c and slave pull cylinder.
2. Hole in clutch pedal arm - put bolt through mini heim attaching to push rod for m/c - hole in firewall and mount m/c.
3. Bent hard line, then soft line to slave. Used mini clutch cable with ball on end to attach to clutch arm. Simple to adjust.
4. Mounted slave to inside frame rail. Voila.
Tex1978 12-15-2005, 01:08 PM Well to tell you the truth I am building this for another guy and I don't think he wants to spend the kinda money it takes to buy Wilwood stuff. I need some stock parts thay anybody can run down to the J/Y or Oreillys and pick up. I do see your thinking on it, becuase Wilwood is some great stuff!
CB87YJ 12-15-2005, 04:11 PM i used my original puke master and a old CJ slave(i would have to search at home for p/n), threaded rod with a coupla nuts for the slave to clutchfork rod.
works perfectly

Tex1978 12-15-2005, 04:18 PM OK, so I need a MC from an 87-?? YJ and an old CJ slave (like from an iron duke ??) Those are the only CJ's that I recall having hydro clutches.
What do you do for the hydro line?
CB87YJ 12-15-2005, 04:37 PM thats a CJ line too,
for me, I just cut, rebent, reflared my old puke line, but i was told about the CJ line.
I think i have those p/ns at home too. actually, i bought the line but reused mine, returned the new one, so, i'm sure i have the numbers at home, ya gotta give me a couple hrs to finish work, get home, find the paperwork.
yeah i think it was from the ironduke, i used a bellhsg from an old CJ too.
it really is an ez setup, not only does it work perfect, i wheel the shit outta it ,she's been my DD for the last 2 yrs and its flawless.
I'm sure I have all the papers and numbers at home in my 'jeep mod box'
lemme know if ya need the numbers
CB
edit- i think its the old GM slave
Tex1978 12-15-2005, 04:53 PM Yeah if you could let me know what I need I would be gracious! What did you use for the slave mount? Did you just fab up something?
The YJ that I am working on is a 94 I believe.....do you think the pujeot master will "bolt" right in?
CB87YJ 12-15-2005, 05:03 PM not sure on the 'bolt up' for the master.
as to the slave, there was bolt holes on the old CJ bellhsg.
I'm not familiar with the 304 setup, you might need to fab.
mine used a 4.0-NP435 as did my buddy.
the only other NP435 setup i have personal experience with is my buddy's 86CJ, not sure what slave he used, I'll call him and ask.
leavin work in 5 minutes, should have your answers by 6-7pm pacific time;)

Tex1978 12-15-2005, 05:17 PM Thanks man, you rock.....going for broke here, you think you could call your buddy and ask him what he used?
Thanks a ton!
CB87YJ 12-15-2005, 07:04 PM ok, dude, I blew an inch of dust off the old box, went thru it and found the info.
I called my bud, but didnt get thru, left him a voicemail, we'll see when he gets back to me:confused:
its possible he used the stock CJ master, but I'll let you know when he calls me.
here are the parts I used. I dont have OEM p/n's, but there are some pretty good descriptions on the receipt.
i used-
early CJ bellhsg and clutch disk (10.5 inch, 1976-1979, T-150, T-18 1-1/16)
hydraulic clutch hose (4 cyl GM)
hydraulic slave (CJ 1980-1982 4cyl)
like I said, your application may vary due to the 304, but I really havent a clue.
I'm sure youll need some kinda pilot bearing too. I needed 1 but mine is a 4.0 motor
Thats about all the help I can give ya for now on this application.
Ill post up if my buddy calls and has any further info.
Best of luck to ya and your buddy on the build. I have always loved my 435 except on the freeway(really wish i had OD):grinpimp:
later dude
CB
Tex1978 12-15-2005, 07:19 PM Thanks man, I already got the pilot from Novak. What GM hose do I need? What exactly is it from? Do you remember?
thanks allot for all the help!
CB87YJ 12-15-2005, 09:29 PM thats the only description i have, maybe CJ 1980-1982 4cyl?
and like i said, if you can find an old pukejoke master and hose in a JY , bend and reflare it like i did.
best i can tell ya rite now, sorry dude.

Tex1978 12-15-2005, 10:08 PM OK, great. You have been a great help!
John Slaughter 12-15-2005, 10:43 PM 1980 cj5 4 cyl had the hyd. cluch. Part's Mike has had the master and slave cyl with a stainless line for sale you could check him out.
http://www.partsmikeparts.com/index.htm
Tex1978 12-15-2005, 11:05 PM I can get the same thing at Oreillys for about 1/4 or Parts mike prices, it pays to do your homework!
McCracken 01-18-2006, 11:19 AM did anyone ever find the correct MC to use?
resqme 01-18-2006, 07:43 PM '80 to '82 CJ5 with 151 4cyl "Iron Duke" motor has the correct clutch master
Jaffer 01-19-2006, 07:26 AM Monkey see .... monkey do ...

actionpaintball 01-19-2006, 07:40 AM I used my YJ master, and chevy slave on a chevy hydraulic bellhousing
McCracken 01-19-2006, 09:02 AM problem is that i have a 75 cherokee that was an auto but i have converted to stick. i've used the mechanical linkage for some time but i'm now going hydraulic. here's my problem (sorry for the large pic)... http://rebelrockrunners.org/nick/Cherokee/Clutch/DSC00693.JPG
i don't have that much room in there. plus when my pedal is touching the floor the distance from point on the pedal to the firewall is 4 3/8" roughly. The longest the rod is on the MC is 4 3/4" roughly. definitely not long enough to make any movement worth a shit.
i've been thinking of going with a Howe hydro throw out bearing but would rather save the money and go this route. thoughts, opinions, questions?
actionpaintball 01-19-2006, 10:01 AM Race application internal type throw-out bearing are known for having about half the life of conventionally throw-outs-especially in the off-roading world. I investigated this before throwing the $dough$ up for my Hydraulic bellhousing. The good thing is the internal all-in-one (HOWE TYPES) tend to go slowly-so you know its time to pull your tanny and overhaul or replace
I went the externally mounted slave after reading a days worth of info-off racing and 4x4 sites from google searches.
McCracken 01-19-2006, 11:03 AM thanks for that info. guess i'll try and go with finding another MC. i'm just having a hard time seeing how the MC i got will fit in there.
Louies106 02-10-2006, 10:04 AM ok as for the master can I use the stock 94 one. The other one will not bolt up to the fire wall cause it is a lot smaller. If the stock one will work with the cj 5 one that would be optimal. Anyone tried that
