: New Arizona Trail - Twisted
Azrckcrawler 03-25-2002, 07:27 AM According to my sources, you can count on one hand the number of people who have made it thru this trail. Add a Zuk to that list. This is most likely the nastiest trail I have run, there are no exits, now way to turn around and really only one line to take. It was just me and Rockzuk yesterday, we walked the trail first and it didn't look too bad (understatement), After he saw me go thru the first two sections the run turned into a solo ride (I did try to turn around). Anyway I did ok till I got to the waterfall, I made it up but got wedge pretty good. While pulling with the winch I pulled the passenger side bead off, it looked ok to continue forward and I was almost thru when I heard the drivers side front tire let all its air out (!@#$$). We got the first tire re-seated no problem but it took over 3 hours to get my Zuk moved forward so we could even get to the drivers side tire  Anyway, enjoy the pics, I'll have more up on my page tonight.
That's tight ......

Carnage: I dented the last piece of straight sheet metal left (the hood), it got a little loving with the hammer when I got home. Also bent one of my new rear springs (rancho 1.5" lifted yj).
scwafish 03-25-2002, 07:35 AM Your a nut. The pics are sweet. That would be a hard trail for anything much wider than a zuk.
Bill4rest 03-25-2002, 07:44 AM Chris,
Me like !!:D  :D  :D
Azrckcrawler 03-25-2002, 08:44 AM Almost forgot, here's a couple pics of Rockzuk's ride, he just got his 6:1's installed.

I don't blame him for not wanting to follow me thru the first trail. the rocks can be a little scratchy :D
I'll have to put that on the list of cool runs I have missed:mad: .
I didn't get your e-mail untill Sunday night. looks cool.

Beadlocks...
Nah, a more experienced spotter. Chad was taking pictures and his friend hadn't spotted anyone before. Quite honestly if my drivers side tire hadn't come off I think it would have slashed it, I was winching when that happened and I pushed that rock waaayyy into that tire.
Rudezuk 03-25-2002, 01:14 PM ok boggers and beadlocks!
Nice pics chris!
poppycock 03-25-2002, 02:16 PM if only arizona wasn't on the face of the sun. :D man that looks sweet.
Chad Bellis 03-25-2002, 03:53 PM That trail was a little nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chris just bring a spare next time and leave it on your trailer! It would have sucked if we could not get it back on the bead and have to find a tire shop open on a sunday all the way out by tabal mesa !!!
But we all had fun and made it home so its all good!!!!
Same time next week right!!!:)
Rockzuk

That trail was built by guys that run full width axles. :D
Chris, looks pretty sweet. I'll have to be there when you go back.
twistedmetal 03-25-2002, 05:56 PM Sounds like every trail up here in the Black Hills. Next time you're at a rock racing event, ask Jason Paule what the trails are like. There is one difference, though. You lucky SOBs don't have a forest over the top of you to make sure the sun can't shine through! And ironically enough, the last trail I ran decided for me that I was going to kill my Scout and build a Zuk. Know what it was called? TWISTED.

I'll be ordering Avalanche's TrailReady's for my zuk. If Chris can pop a bead, I'll be popping them too. :D

The rock that did it is now named Beadbreaker rock :D Actually it was totally avoidable if you got eyes watching everything. This is one aspect of winching no one really mentions, you gotta watch everything because if something hangs up or a tire starts pushing into a ledge/undercut/etc, that winch isn't going to stop and odds are you won't feel it till something lets go. In my case it was the bead. So from now on no more 5.0 rated trails on Sunday and no 5.0 trails unless we have a good sized crew running :D almost forgot, the tire was several inches beyond the edge of the rim, I heard air glanced down and then the tire just emptied.
As always wicked pics!
Chris, I know you've made mention of the advantage of having a lopped off cage (sloping to the wheel wells) vs. the "family cage". What's your take on RockZuk's style cage vs. your own?
Just my $.035 CDN but I think AZ pictures are better!:flipoff2:

Why get Avalanche's:question:  just go to Trailready and get those...probably cheaper too.......unless you want to Av logo:rainbow: :D
fatkid 03-26-2002, 09:21 AM How much are the Trailready's? I've seen a few people that run em...
fatkid 03-26-2002, 09:22 AM Frost,
You should sell one of your axles to finance you build up on your Sammy...:flipoff2:
Bill4rest 03-26-2002, 09:24 AM two bills I think
TNToy 03-26-2002, 09:26 AM If I remember correctly, Avalanche sells Trailready locks, right?
Well, whoever it is they sell, they use flush-fitting bolts, instead of the hex's used by that company, you get the pimpin' avalanche logo, and they're like $5 more than the other company each.
tdavis 03-26-2002, 10:46 AM go here for info:
http://www.avalancheengr.com/beadlocks/beadlocks.htm
http://www.trailready.com/bead_lock_wheels.htm
$202 vs. $199, for 15x8 or 15x10, 6x5.5
It's the button head bolts that are counter sunk that I like.

My cage provides more clearance, slightly less weight. Other than that I can't see any other benefits other than asthetics. I prefer the shorter, lower look that the "sport" cages provide. I let people ride in the back seat of my Zuk once, after that I sold the seat, these rigs need to be as light as possible up top to be really effective.

if you read on the Trailready site, their bolts are ALL counter sunk.....admit it you want the logo J/K:flipoff2: :D
fatkid 03-26-2002, 10:31 PM champion...
High5 03-26-2002, 10:38 PM the avalanche version uses a larger size bolt. atleast that is what i read on a post this weekend.
fatkid 03-26-2002, 10:40 PM anyone know the reason for the larger ring? :)
scwafish 03-27-2002, 06:36 AM anyone know the reason for the larger ring?
That taller style is a circle track thing, I believe to keep mud out of the wheel. They make big foam inserts you can tuck into the wheel to fill the space.
The reason for it in rock applications is in your own post....BLING BLING :D They do look purty kewl.
fatkid 03-27-2002, 09:56 AM that's what I thought, Bling Bling

I would use the larger ring for protecting the valve stem and not getting large rocks wedged in the wheel.
Chad Bellis 03-27-2002, 07:26 PM Hey I build my cage that way was cuz I run (like) a tonto cover over the back tub part to hold my spare parts in in cace of a roll over and on top of it I put my big cooler 4 beer so the cage goes all the way back so it protects all the good stuff ! ( it just was not in on that trip and I also had no spare parts with me so that is also why only Chris ran it and I sat it out)

Coffee Boy 03-27-2002, 07:33 PM Excellent pics Chris!Damn,I gotta get a rig!!maybe a Zuk:bender:
scwafish 03-27-2002, 10:30 PM and not getting large rocks wedged in the wheel.
The down side would be holding the little rocks in...kathunk...kathunk...kathunk...kathunk:D
tdavis 03-27-2002, 10:41 PM hmm..
I know someone who runs the trail ready bead locks, and he's had zero problems with them. Never caught any rocks in them. The bigger rings are to the flex down - the ring has a tendency to distort when you bolt it down.
Oh, and the it's the bolts that are different (other than the logo) on the trail ready vs. avalanche versions. Take a close look - the TR's are hex head, the Av's are button head.

LOL yea but at least they would not hinder your forword progress...or back:D
scwafish 03-28-2002, 10:12 PM know someone who runs the trail ready bead locks, and he's had zero problems with them. Never caught any rocks in them.
It wasn't meant to be a serious comment. I'm sure it could happen, but it wouldnt matter.
fatkid 03-28-2002, 10:52 PM I heard the rings were for holding fruit and stuff for when your on the trail...
