: Painless FI Harness: Any experiences?
Charly 03-25-2002, 09:19 AM Hey,
I really like the reputation of the Centech harnesses, but I know a fellow who has had excellent luck with Painless FI harnesses (and they are cheaper).
I do recall a lot of comments about Painless's quality...ie. "Painful".
I was wondering if people could say why they dislike/like the Painless, or the Centech.
Something a little more than "they suck" please.
I'm gonna be buying one for my 350 TBI swap into my YJ soon.
Thanks,
Charly
Lil'John 03-25-2002, 09:40 AM They suck:p:p:p
I've used both their TBI and chasis harness on my FJ40.
The chasis harness is a bit of a pain to deal with but I partially blame that on the funky Toyota wiring scheme:D
The TBI harness on the other hand was pure crap for me. I had to replace three plugs AND splice in a sensor that they were missing.
Add to that their placing of things like the map sensor, knock computer, fuel pump relay, and timing connector in cab/inaccessible for smog related purposes, I finally ripped the piece of shit out of my vehicle and have thrown it in the trash(actually it is sitting in a brown paper bag waiting for me to scavage any and all wire and connectors from it).
I have since gone to a wrecking yard and pulled a harness out of a vehicle and used it with GREAT results. Sure it took me about 2 hours worth of work but I got everything I needed and everything matched.
I would HIGHLY recommend you spend the extra $100 on a quality harness and bypass Pain-in-the-ass :mad3:

Is this who is doing your vortec harness????
Charly 03-25-2002, 02:30 PM I'll tell you what....I just called SpeedScene and spoke with Zac.
VERY IMPRESSIVE!
Price was decent too.
And they can easily incorporate an inline VSS (transducer) into my application..which would be best for gas mileage (an honest concern with wheeling here).
Thanks. I had never heard of them before.
Charly
CJ Lagos 03-25-2002, 02:36 PM I used a painless harness on my Chevy TPI motor and it worked awesome. It literally took about 15 minutes to hook the stuff up and about 45 minutes to route it correctly...very nice, made my work 1000 times easier. I dunno about TBI stuff.

this is what I try telling people he knows his Shit!
and good prices
Adam,
Charly 03-26-2002, 02:54 PM I was debating whether to share something Zac said (I don't want him bombarded with info only requests), but I figured in the long run, it would be best for his business.
It was one of the things that impressed me the most.

'Nuff said.
Realsquash 03-26-2002, 05:39 PM Be a man and make it yourself or get a new one cheap and modify it. There isn't going to be a harness you can buy that it going to fit just the way you want it...

StinkBug 03-26-2002, 05:53 PM i'm sending my harness and ECU to speedscene tomorrow, awesome guys, at least in the emails i've had with em.

Ok How many 95 LT1 harnesses have you built and Computer's have you reprogramed ( a must for VATS) let me see there are like 3 people on the united states that know how to remove VATS and they are not cheap and have you built a smog legal 100 % smog legal unit and yes you can have it built just the way you want it
"just ask" they will be happy to help you get it right
I have bought many harnesses and Speed Scene has far the best Qaulity
many other harnesses can be Hacked through and Built but tell me how it drives or runs
I rather have it right!

I am not scared of wires
but when it comes to the harness I got!!
and What I feel my time is worth buying one is way cheaper!!

Adam,
tom elliston at sunray wires in an early 90's vats controler into the harness. it is alot cheaper than having the vcm reprogramed. specifics i can't give. i used a 97 vcm with my 99 vortec to get rid of it but but he told me this after i alreay bough the 97 computer.

A little off the subject, but does the vcm have to be reprogrammed if you switch to a manual tranny? I'm guessing not. I'm doing a similar swap (98 vortec/97 vcm) into a CJ. I bought the $120 Helms encylopedia. Very detailed. It looks like there's only about a handful of wires (B+, ign, start, ground) to connect to the CJ, keep the fuel pump relay and toss the vortec fuse box and half the wire harness! Sounds easy...will know in a week or so!

Adam,
There is nothing special about a 95 LT1 harness or an 87 TBI harness or any other. They are just wires. The problem is getting all of the connectors at a reasonable cost. I'd still build a harness from misc bits.
And if you would do a little research on the internet you'd discover just how many thousands of other people have removed VATS all by themselves, even on a 95 LT1. Start with http://www.tunercat.com Along with the joy of doing your own VATS, you can reprogram everything else.
And no, I haven't done a 95 LT1 harness, I did a 1992 TPI harness, and I reprogrammed the stock 305 TPI chip to run a port-injected built 454. And it runs dam fine.

if you go from a manual to an auto yes, auto to manual no. i chose to keep the fuse box. the vcm relay, fuel pump relay and some of the fuses needed are already in there. i bought a fsm for the vehicle i got the motor from and i got a print of the pin out of the 97 vcm. i had to move a couple of the wires in the vcm connectors because of differences in the years but only a few. injectors 1 and 8 were wired differently in the plugs so i had to move them (easy to do. the connector comes apart and the wires with the pins will come out and you just plug into the desired spot). there was one or two more but i can't remember off hand. the biggest problem i had was the 4L80E i was going to run. something in the vcm or the wiring was causing the sifting sequence to be completly inverted. it wanted to take off in 4th gear. if a scan tool was hooked to it and you told it to go to 4th gear it would go to 1st, 3rd=2nd, 2nd=3rd, etc. i took it to two different places fearing i had screwed something up in the wiring and after almost 3 months and $1500 i gave up on it and threw a th400 in it. it runs great now. i havn't been running a vss and it still runs great. i havn't been running on because i was waiting to get my atlas before i bough an inline vss for my spedo cable. i just got the atlas in so i need to order the vss. i probably don't need it but i want to see if i can tell a difference in how it runs with it.

Good info...still got the 97 vcm pinout?
High5 03-31-2002, 05:34 AM i should be able to dig it up here some where.
Johncm 05-30-2002, 08:19 PM hi adam
SVARAS 05-31-2002, 06:09 AM I did the same Q' 2 weeks ago. I can tell you that for the responses that I got, the trend is to use either Howell or Centech. At the end, I switched my mind, take out my incomplete TBI, and bought the new Holley Truck Avenger. We will see.....
Snoopy 05-31-2002, 07:00 AM I've never used the Painless with FI ~ but I personally like the few I've done..

Adam,
We all know you Electricians charge way too much anyway:flipoff2: I say build your own but make sure you have the factory wiring diagrams..
BlazzinOR 05-31-2002, 11:19 AM Painless was painfree for my K5-TPI install. Everything was plug and play, well marked, and no issues with plugs or broken wires. My bud that builds TPI motors and does swaps has done over 135 now using Painless without an issue. That said, I have heard on a few FI boards that their reputation was (as in past tense) bad.
Price is about $300.............can someone share the Centech's or Speedscene's pricing...........?
"Good prices" means little - need a comparison point please.
BlazzinOR 05-31-2002, 11:21 AM high5 - Try www.jagsthatrun.com for that VSS generator...............originally did my TPI conversion without a VSS, now have it installed and mileage is slightly better (2mpg), plus the idle quality is improved. Mine too ran 'fine' without it but I'd do it, simple install and not too costly $70ish.
StinkBug 05-31-2002, 12:06 PM I went with speed scene and yeah the product is great and the tech support is great but the service sucks. read the following thread to see what i went thru.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53165
also i finally got the O2 pigtail they said they only charged me shipping for, and the box said $5.90 shipping and they billed me $25  to make it even better, they only lengthened one of the wires not both like i was told, and the connectors on the O2 end are wrong. I've fawkin had it with these guys.
