: 1996 S10 4X4 Front Driveshaft Removal

This may sound like dumb question, but I don't want to break anything. I'm working on a 1996 S10 4X4 V6 5 speed manual trans.

I can't seem to get the front driveshaft out of the transfer case and my local auto parts stores don't have any manuals for this year S10 and they couldn't answer my question for me. I did order a manual but it won't be here til Monday.

Anyway, it doesn't pull directly out of transfer case. At least not with the maximum amount of force I'm willing to exert not knowing what I am doing. It looks like there might be a place between the transfer case and the rubber boot where this thing might split, but that is stuck solid too. Can anyone tell me where this comes apart and maybe how much force I can expect to to able to use without breaking something?

Thanks in advance!

there has to be straps holding it to the yoke. take the bolts out

if not, i guess you have to take the ujoint out. behind the ujoint there will be a large nut.

if there are no straps (never seen that before) there will be a snap ring on each ujoint cap, take them off. use a socket smaller then the cap and a brasshammer to beat the joint from the yoke. the cap will fall on the ground and you will do the same for the other cap (switch sides) now without the caps the joint is smaller then the yoke and will fall out.

but there will be straps there just covered in shit.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I got the straps off of the yoke, and have that end free, but it doesn't simply pull out of the transfer case. I don't want to force anything since I don't know where it is supposed to part from the TC.

Thanks for the reply.

ok yeah you dint make that clear at all

small pry bar between the joint and the yoke... pry it. if the straps are off there is nothing you can hurt.

this is a noob question if i ever seen one.

is the slip in the driveshaft or is it in the t-case?

if there is no slip in the shaft, then it is in the tcase, and the boot is holding it to the t-case. cut one of the clamps off and them pull the shaft off.

gm dealer should be able to get you a new clamp, but it will require a special tool to install it.

There is a snap ring on the output shaft that holds the drive shaft on. Get a hammer and you can usually knock it off.

Not that much of a noob question:rolleyes:

I think this might be the answer, cuz when I pull on the shaft, the boot does stretch out like I could pull it out if the clamp on the boot was cut off. However, there is what looks like it might be a "slip" to quote Ryan22re between the tcase and the part of the shaft with the boot. It doesn't give at all when I pull on it, but I was thinging maybe a few whacks with a hammer might move it.

I don't see any snap ring anywhere obvious, weeze.

cheaprides, the shaft is free of the yoke on the differential already. The other end won't pull out of the tcase. There are no nuts, bolts, straps or clips on that end.

I'm going to go back down to the garage shortly and see if a hammer and drift can move anything. If not, I'll just have to wait til Monday and pick up the book. I guess there are a few different ways Chevy put these together from what you folks are saying, and I really don't know which version I have.

Thanks for taking the time to advise me. I appreciate it.

Have a great day!

I have that same setup on my front shaft. Shot or two with a rubber or plastic hammer will get it right off. There is a snap ring on the inside holding it on.

That's what it took. hehehe

Actually, I used a drift and a hammer, gave it a couple of moderate whacks, and she she moved right off the spined shaft coming out of the tcase.

I'm on my way now... thanks everyone. Now comes the fun, getting tcase and tranny out. The things I get myself into by bein neighborly. But I love working on cars and trucks. Even in my old (46) age, working on stuff like this turns me on. :) Maybe it's the challenge, I don't know.

Thanks again all! Happy holidays!

Now I get the snap ring thing I think... knock off the shaft, not the ring. It's off, thanks. :)
