i got brand new tires on my '78, real nice tires ya know. they're capable mud and snow terrains and i still have a problem catching traction in the snow, in rain, and even on dry pavement. and all i got is a little ol' mild 350 with a sm465 tranny. i think my truck is allergic to inclement weather. also when i shift the t-case into 4wheel and i stick my foot in it, i get a really bad thumping sound coming out of the front end. i can drive it like a normal person at any speed i want to and it wont thump, it only happens when i stomp on it. any one know whats up?

You need a "centering Kit" in the front drive shaft. There is a "CV Joint" on the transfer case end of the front shaft that needs rebuilt. Basically it's a sleeve with two U-jointsin it with a knuckle between them. there's a coil spring inside that knuckle, that rides inside a bearing. It's actually a very strait forward repair. if you can change a U-Joint, you can fix this.

All Terrain tires don't always work like you expect them too, and sometimes they could be the worst thing to drive in the rain with. Been there done that, coming around an on ramp onto the I-5 North in San Diego in a rain storm going 35mph sent my trucks rear end sliding around that eventually made my truck skid down the freeway backwards with cars coming right at me:barf:

A sledge hammer. Two tons of dynamite. An atomic bomb. A 1 ton 4X Chevy. All good methods of ridding the world of rice and the cars that use them.:grinpimp:

Buy a groover (hot knife) and sipe your tires. I did that on mud and snows I put on my DD ,an 87 Caprice and I pass everything, I commute to a ski resort(Breckenridge),over an almost 12000 ft pass(Hoosier) in CO. and we're getting tons of snow this year. The braking on hardpack is incredible too. The other day I was laughing at a Camry in my rearview sliding all over behind me because I could stop quicker than him.
