I use DOM seamless tubing (1.75"OD x .120" wall) in my cage, and it wasn't cheap, but it wasn't $9.35/ft. I think it was about $4.00/ft, but I can't remember. But I don't worry about the strength of my cage.
<IMG SRC="smilies/trooper.gif" border="0">
poppycock 11-01-2001, 08:19 PM well i'm looking for about 120ft of 1.75 .120 wall. i'm not worried about strength just don't like getting raped at the checkout line. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> i've bought a lot of steel at this place and most of their prices are competitive but this $9.35 b.s. is never going to happen. hell it'd cost me $1122 for just the tubing.

I have a place in dallas that sells DOM 1.5" .120 wall... $2.50 a foot... in 1 foot increments. I paid over $5 a foot awhile back. I found the place by asking the question of a guy that builds cages for a living... fine someone who does it near you and ask him where he buys his tubing.
fatkid 11-01-2001, 11:26 PM I buy tubing weekly, and at my cost 1.75" .120 wall DOM went for about $2.77 a foot. Thats at wholesale. It also depends if the yard you buy from stocks it, and remember DOM comes in random lengths, so you could end up getting more than you need or a little less. For example I needed around 80' and I wound up getting just under that, I got 4 sticks that where anywhere between 18' and 22'. It also depends how much you need small quanities means your going to pay. Just last week we need a piece of 2 1/8 .188 wall and it cost me around $170 for one piece of tube! Tell ya the truth I can't see the reason why you would want to use DOM, HREW is fine. But it's only money. Just my .02
poppycock 11-01-2001, 11:44 PM i'm just pricing right now. i think hrew is what i'll end up using to keep the cost down.
fatkid 11-01-2001, 11:51 PM HREW, works fine. I the only time that we use DOM is when the rules call for it. The price on 1 3/4 .120 wall is about $23 a stick. I think that's alot cheaper, however 2" .120 is only $24 a stick, why not use 2"? Are you planing on doing the cage internal or are ya cutting? <IMG SRC="smilies/eyemouth.gif" border="0">
Rudezuk 11-02-2001, 12:18 AM I have prices at home for the local shop here....pretty descent price....ill let you know tomorrow.....1 3/4 is a good size...ill take some pics of my cage and post tomorrow...
poppycock 11-02-2001, 12:47 AM i'm thinking 1.75 would be perfect. that's a big price differance for the hrew. sounds right for my budget. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> i want to get rid of most of the body and replace it with tubes. oh, and i don't want to die. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

scwafish 11-02-2001, 06:58 AM Poppy-you should talk to Jason, he buys lots of tube locally. He'll know where to get a fair deal. Unfortunately for you he's at the Hammers til Saturday or Sunday though.
fatkid 11-02-2001, 09:51 AM Are ya thinking exo? we used 2" for mine, and it's taken some hard hits. <IMG SRC="smilies/skull.gif" border="0">
mudlite 11-02-2001, 10:56 AM What do you use to bend tubing? I know there are pipe benders for cheap on the market, but what about cheap tube benders. Why not use pipe?

We use a JD2 Bender. The bender is cheap, it's the dyes that cost cash. We As far as pipe it's just not as strong as tube from what I understand.
mytzlflick 11-03-2001, 04:58 AM first off don't use pipe. its more brittle, teds to crack on hard impact instead of bending which is what you want. yes hrew is weaker than dom. I have split hrew before (strangly this happened when I used it to hold a bushing in my suspension, musta froze over winter) but the cage has never been a problem.
Rudezuk 11-03-2001, 07:28 AM Poppy, that shop here in Sac S&K steel sells the 1 3/4 .120 wall for $1.85 a foot....thats $37 for 20'.
Just to give you some other ideas of what things cost...
6x2 .188 (1/4 wall, I use this for bumbers) $5.25 per ft.
1 1/2 Sched 80 Pipe (works good for shackle mounts...just buy bushings and slide in these) $2.75/ft
poppycock 11-03-2001, 09:49 AM that's a price i can live with. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> thanks for checking rude. now i just gotta get the engine in and it's cage time <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
incontrol 11-03-2001, 09:56 AM Just go with ERW. DOM is way overkill for this sport. Most of the buggies you see on this site are built with ERW, just ask Lance what he used in his.

suzuki w/the HEAT 11-07-2001, 08:35 PM i used .250 wall dom on my exo cage around my cab and .120 wall around the rest. i'm glad i used .250 dom because it save my ass. some one may have seen the sluice box roll. it was cool. it ended up bending my cage about 3" in on the passenger side and put a buckle on the floor in the center of the cab! it also bent the frame and the .250 4x4" angle rockers. so don't be cheap now. also try a place called team tube in west sac. these places are wierd for tube. they go by weight. you want to by between 100-200 ft. or the price is outragious. i bought 1 stick about 7ft and they wanted $13.00 a ft. the same stick in 25ft was actually cheaper. it goes by weight. and no dom is not seamless. it stands 4 drawn over mandrel. it is stronger the cold or hot electric weld. i would recamend approx. .190-.250 wall from frame and around passengers and .120 wall electric weld around back and in front and for gussets and braces. have u ever seen a sammy tie rod let lose at 60mph? i have and there is not much truck left. go big or go home.you never know how bad you can roll your truck. i tell u what that dom saved my life many times. i know if i rolled end over end on the freeway and got hit by a semi that my cage would not collapse. just my .02
fatkid 11-07-2001, 09:32 PM .250 wall ? think that's a bit much? SCORE and SCCA only require that you use .120 wall and thats for cars/trucks that go over a 100mph and hit hard! SCORE says for a wieght of 4000lbs and over with a closed cab that you only have to use 2" .120 wall, if 2" .120 will work for SCORE I think 2" .120 will work for a lil Zuk. I think you ment to say go heavy as all hell or go home.:)
poppycock 11-07-2001, 09:35 PM i don't want the weight of .250 wall either. :D .120 will be fine.
zukiboy 11-08-2001, 05:55 AM try....
www.onlinemetals.com
i got some 1.5 .120 DOM....prices are reasonable...shipping is the killer
fatkid 11-08-2001, 08:26 AM Do they sell anything longer than 8'?
zukiboy 11-08-2001, 08:54 AM no i guess not.....that could be a problem for making the main hoops of a cage.....i already had a davesport cage to begin with....i ordered three 8ft. pieces to reinforce and add to the cage when i chopped the top on my hard top
fatkid 11-08-2001, 08:59 AM I don't think 8' wil get it.:)

Are you out of your fawk'n mind!!!!!!!
Why not just go SOLID??
There is not one Motor sport that calls for 250 wall!!!!
As far as Bending of the cage go's, THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT in a roll that hard....
If you were to design and brace a cage properly you will have an "HEAVY DUTY" cage in .120 wall...
Like FATKID said, SCORE calls for .120 wall 2" on 4000+ pound trucks that run 130 mph PLUS!!!!!...
Overkill is cool, but not to the point of stupidity:rolleyes:
Rudezuk 11-08-2001, 12:04 PM .250 wall........are we building tanks or wheelers????
That is insane!!!! If you bent .250 wall 3" with a rollover in a sammi....you need to recheck your design!!! Ive rolled 4 times with my cage, all i have is scratches!!! and im using .120 wall 1 3/4".
bobaki 11-08-2001, 02:17 PM zuk w/heat

suzuki w/the HEAT 11-10-2001, 11:02 PM ya i said .250 wall dom. you can never have to much. i like a sence of security. it is only 20-40lbs heavyer. i used 2 20ft sticks around my doors and i will use it again on my toyota. .120 wall is probably ok for joe wheeler but sorry i like to get it on!!!!!!!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
suzuki w/the HEAT 11-10-2001, 11:15 PM and as far as u go rud zuk. you only have scratches on your cage because u only rolled into the maybury bushes. you have a inside cage so for yours to bend you would have your body wraped around it. i have a exo cage!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i got scratches on my cage on auburn blvd. the cool stuff comes on the trail shane
not in the garage.:flipoff2:

bobaki 11-11-2001, 09:25 AM Poppy my chart says if we go 13/4 x .500,the 100' part would only weigh 660lbs------your thoughts:D
fatkid 11-11-2001, 11:29 AM I know this guy is Just a " joe wheeler" but I think he gets it awn, and yes we used 2" .120 wall. I think you should change your name to "Suzuki w/the weight".:flipoff2:
Tin Bender 11-11-2001, 04:11 PM
If I'm follow'n your logic wrong, let me know....
Your say'n that my 9mm might kill someone fine,
but I should get a cannon because it'll make me feel more "secure"...
My car works get for get'n around town,
but a semi would make me feel more "secure"...
.120 wall is fine for a 4000+ truck that see's 130mph, or a ralley car that falls of cliffs at 90mph,
but .250wall on a 2000- rig that MIGHT go over once or twice at less than 1mph is better cause i'd feel more "secure"....
My sence of "secure" comes NOT from what it's MADE OF,
but the DESIGN work and FABRICATION that go's into make'n it!!
Please show all of "us" just how much of "joe wheeler" your not... POST SOME PICS OF YOUR CAGE and maybe some ACTION?
Words are CHEAP.....
bobaki 11-11-2001, 04:30 PM Try to get something in the picture that would prove you are on the same planet..........:D
fatkid 11-11-2001, 04:33 PM Gots to see some pics...:D

fatkid 11-11-2001, 08:13 PM The Con is kinda of a long trip for us, so when we go we like to spend about a week there. July is our annual Con run, although now that we make our own hours were gonna start making a few more trips a year. The Hammers on the other hand are only about 120 miles so it's a weekend thing, you should bring your Zuk out to see what it can do.:)
fatkid 11-11-2001, 08:15 PM right, I remember that zuk. It was the one on the ramp.

Peabody 11-11-2001, 08:30 PM Shoot, I made a headache rack out of 2" .250 dom for our old Cat grader. Leaned it up against a few trees and it never tweaked. Keeping in mind that the grader is in the neighborhood of 10 tons, sounds a bit much for a sami...
just my $.02 :smokin:
fatkid 11-11-2001, 08:34 PM that was kind of my point, did you say 10 tons!

suzuki w/the HEAT 11-13-2001, 11:24 PM man u guy's r rough. i give up. i guess u r right. i'll just plasma cut the .250 wall off my thruck and install some .120 wall .
u guys all missed the point. bigger and thicker can't hurt! plain and simple! and as far as pics go those r some ones i still had in the digital so sorry the soup bowl isn't getting it awn i'll try to get pics of that narly rock at the gate keeper. I'll try to get some cooler photos. why i don't know because all that is going to happen is someone has to have a better one and try to talk smack. "That sammy rolling down the cliff of the box isn't shit. i rolled once to when my tire blew out on the road." bla bla bla. ya u r right .120 will work and work just fine is that what u needed to here? it's like people talking smack about a 60 in a yota. " it's to big, it would work better with a 60 and toy outters." it works, and works damn good.overkill maybe. birfields no. breakage? probably not. so the moral is if .250 wall is to big and .120 wall is perfect, is a 35 inch perfect and a 40inch to much? it depends on the guy. let me put this in other words. a 5inch penise is ok and a 10 inch penise is overkill? u guys stay with the 5 inchers and i'll stick with my 10incher. let the smack talkin start.

suzuki w/the HEAT 11-13-2001, 11:42 PM by the way about the gussets. ya i need a few more gussets and more tube but it is no way finished. the part that bent is in the picture. you can't see the buckle but the three braces under the truck go from the frame to .250" angle iron iron and the cage is attached from there. the part that bent is the angle iron, truck frame , and floor board. no dom bent. it did move the bottom of the cage in about 3" . i did manage to move it back out a bit with 3 torches and 3 chains and a few trucks. this is why i speak so highly about the thickness of dom i use.
I'm not talkin smack tinbender but why did u capital professional?
