: Range Rover fusible link current ratings?
PTSchram 12-20-2005, 09:31 AM Yes, I searched and got either 250 posts, or 385:flipoff2:
Shopboy's new '93 SWB had a hidden danger lurking under the bonnet. A previous owner decided he didn't need any of those pesky fuse things (we don't need no stinking fuses). The primary leads running into the cabin had the fusibles removed, a piece of #12 wire run from the battery and all of the primaries tied together intothis wire!
The primary wires are pretty hefty, say maybe #12 or 14. Ten circuits in all.
Any suggestions for size of fuses we should use?
Larry? Didn't you have this issue with your rig?
Peace,

My Defender has 4 Maxi-Fuses instead of Fusible Links from the factory, which I highly highly prefer. Depending on the circuits, it's either 60 amp or 30 amp. Maybe you can snag one of the fuse blocks from somewhere.
I don't like fusible links because of how they act when they fail. It can potentially ground out against the body since it's all uncontained, and the sparking is quite a lot like a fireworks display even when they fail properly.
I believe that Painless Wiring also makes a maxi-fuse block.

pendy 12-20-2005, 12:30 PM I recomend one 60 amp. That is how I repair customer vehicles now. The fusible link cord is a pain to work with.

The Painless block is made by Blue Sea
Most marine shops have it for much less than what Painless wants.

PTSchram 12-20-2005, 02:09 PM If Pendy says 60 amps is enough, that's good enough for me. If it isn't, I'll be back to trash what's left of his reputation! :flipoff2:

Not unless your referring to the one time I connected a wire directly to ground without a fuse... I was hoping nobody remembered that one.:shaking:
I have run all of my accessories to a power block with 4 seperate fuses varying from 20-50 amp. But everything else that hasn't been removed by me is still there. I think.

And "They" say I'm a hack!
I thought for sure you'd had a fusible link issue in the recent past.

SlowRVR 12-20-2005, 04:04 PM Pendy, you run a single 60 amp fuse? Or 60 amps for each line?
I replaced mine maybe a year ago with fusible link from NAPA, but I didn't do a very good job and need to redo it. Paul, Matt Browne (of BWO) has a really nice fuse box installed in his engine bay in lieu of the fusible links. I think I have a pic somewhere.

Judging from the relatively small gauge of the wire that was used to replace the fusible links, 60 amps is probably plenty. I have a coupla wiring harnesses from EAS conversions with the Maxi-Fuse holders and will likely use two of those and split the circuits randomly to allow for some degree of separation, should we find one circuit has a greater current load than the others.
I saw the generic fusible links at NAPA but they were only listed by wire gauge and I was concerned that without a better idea as to the current loading, I'd be shooting in the dark.

SlowRVR 12-20-2005, 10:02 PM My understanding is that you match the guage to that of the wire, and then the length of the link determines its' resitance. I don't know, they seem kinda ghetto to me. The MAXI-fuse option will alow for a much cleaner install.

I wanteverybody to see this! Maybe I'm not the hack I've been made out to be:flipoff2:
Junkyddog11 12-21-2005, 04:55 AM The fuse panel I have in my truck is just for th lights, CB, GPS etc, its made by Blue Seas, nice stuff. My shopgirrrrl runs a marine hardware store so all my wiring is Anchor or Blue Seas. All the other wiring into the truck remains stock.
I use the Anchor and Blue Seas catalouges for reference when it come to wire, fuse etc requirements. They list all the Coast Guard approved specs on everything, and hey, if its good enough for the Coasties, its good enough for 200 miles offshore and that should be good enough for Rovers. If anyone needs catalouges or info on this stuff let me know.
