: Tankota's Progress Pics
wheelinjp 03-25-2002, 05:12 PM I was over at Tankota's place yesterday and the Tankota machine is moving up in the swamp. Nice level height with the waggys at all 4 corners, and the hybrid d60-toy rear came out perfect. He is looking good on those 38.5 14.5 sxs. Thanks to him and Sixgun that rig is coming together.
wheelinjp 03-25-2002, 05:14 PM Cool d60-toy wide rear hybrid.
MD11Fr8Dog 03-25-2002, 05:54 PM Is he gonna have to air down to get out of the garage??
wheelinjp 03-25-2002, 06:06 PM Yes he is.
Cheyenne 03-25-2002, 08:31 PM Hey Tankota,
About time you get a pic of your cruiser during your sixth build up:flipoff2:
So I noticed I was not given any credit for helping out:(

Tankota 03-25-2002, 09:12 PM Cheyenne helped me quite a bit on a large number of things on the cruiser.
MD11, I might be swapping on some 31s off the toy pickup in order to get the cruiser out of the garage :D
Land Crusher 03-25-2002, 09:38 PM just curious what gear ratio ????
when do you hope to have it ready for the woods ??
orangefj45 03-25-2002, 09:42 PM what components did you use on that rear axle assy?
and about that j**p thing ( ): well, maybe i'll be nice since us cruiser heads try to stay calm about this sort of stuff.
Tankota 03-25-2002, 10:19 PM The cruiser currently has 410's for now
Plan on having it out in the woods in 2 weeks:D
Cheyenne 03-25-2002, 11:05 PM Oh how sweet wheelilnjp :flipoff2: for giving me such a warm welcome:flipoff2:
So wheelinjp why are you in the cruiser section :flipoff2: Is it because people in this section are nice and give advice to questions :flipoff2: I also don't have a need to check out the Jeep section:flipoff2: Since I don't own a Jeep:flipoff2: As for understanding jeep thing:flipoff2: Don't really plan on it:flipoff2:

To answer your Q it has 86 and newer toy axle tubes and flange out. That includes the brakes, drum, axleshaft, and e-brake. The toy tubes are cut off close to the flange, machined down and inserted into the d60 tubes. Then Dave welded them in and now has a 58in. wms to wms d60 with Toy axles and brakes and wheel pattern to match the cruiser front. The gears are 4.10 and he welded the carrier. I gave him the d60 and the advantage over a cruiser rear or an 8lug 60 is the pinion and gear strength over the cruiser axle, and the ease of replacement and frugalness of a d60 with cheap replacement parts(axles, brakes)
When Dave came up with the idea I thought it was a great idea and it has come together perfect.
Sorry Dave I was bored this morning and had to answer, but you probably have some to add.Talk to you later

Air down to maybe 2 psi. :D
A buddy had a TON of steel in the back of his rig. Pulled into the shop via a side door, unloaded everything... went to pull out and
did a number on the truck roof & garage door frame (7'??). Explain to your insurance agent that one.
Q on the axle shafts? Did you have TOYOTA Axle shafts machined to fit the spider gears of a D60, or ?? I was thinking the toyota shafts are smaller than D60 axle shafts.
Thanks,
Tom :usa:
Cruzilla 03-26-2002, 07:33 AM Damn, good lookin rig!
Sixgun 03-26-2002, 09:16 AM Hey nice looking rig, I wanna see pics of the big black one though...:D
Dave you gotta get a damn digi cam bro, it must be gettin expensive in beer and pizza to invite Sean over all the time to get pics......:D :D :D
j/k Sean, did Dave tell ya the story about how I caught my index finger between a SM465/NP205 and a block of wood??? smarts a little.
Or how about the time I caught myself on fire when we were building my rear bumper?? yep burned a two foot section of my shirt to ash before I even noticed
Sean I got beer and pizza bro, can you come over with your cool digi cam and burn some pics of my new rear bumper?? Ohh wait I forgot your digi cam dosn't like my Cruiser :D
Tankota 03-26-2002, 10:20 AM Sheesh...busy board this morning:eek:
Roundrocktom, the dana 60, dana 44, and toy cruiser, and toy pickup all use the same size 30 spline axles.
HOWEVER, the spicer splines are cut at a different angle than the toyota ones so the toy splines have to be regrooved a little deeper. I had a friend do it to his with a die grinder (sounds crude but he runs a 4.7:1 t-case, 37" boggers and has been to moab, rubicon etc and also placed in the top 10 at the first NW rock crawl with no rear axle problems yet so his die grinder method may be OK).
Sixgun, a digicam would be nice. It is on our list...in fact we were looking at ones yesterday on the internet. Looks like the ones that would satisfy out requirements are in the $400-700 range:(
As for pics of "the black one" you must mean the new tow rig (black powerstroke crew cab 4x4). Yah, I don't have any pics of that one yet...probably get a nice pic of it when I hook up the cruiser to it to take it in to get the exhaust done in a week or so.
As for the 58" WTW rear end...I'm thinking of using wheel spacers on both front and rear to get wider for some more stability. The thing is friggin huge!
As for a couple specs on the rig:
Chevy v-8
SM465
NP205
Dana 60/toy hybrid rear (welded w/ 4.10s)
cruiser frontend (lockrite w/ Bobby Long super birfields...I'll be getting these birfs next week before I wheel the thing)
Wagoneer 7 leaf springs at all four corners
38.5"x14.5" SXs on 10" champion beadlocks (thanks Cheyenne!)
Getting alot closer to finishing the project and am getting sick of working on it. I like wheeling more than 4 month long projects:rasta:
Land Crusher 03-26-2002, 06:38 PM I like the 205 case for durability
but the gearing is pritty high
do you have any other plans for the
transfer case ???
maybe a 203 in front of it ?
Shipwreck 03-27-2002, 08:51 AM Damn, Nice work on the rear axle...
I assume they started as mini truck tubes rather than FJ60 axles cut down. Right?
But what I'm really impressed with is how you cut out that rear cross member with a pair of scissors.

Tankota 03-27-2002, 10:16 AM But what I'm really impressed with is how you cut out that rear cross member with a pair of scissors.
I hadn't noticed that. That is absolutely hilarious! Thanks for the laugh.
The entire axle tube that is visible in the picture is Dana 60 tubes. The toy truck tubes (about 4 inches of them) are slipped inside the ends of the dana 60 tubes, then welded and gusseted.
(I basically combined a '92 toy rear end and a dana 60 rear end.)
Landcrusher, as for the gearing it is the same as the cruiser t-case I was using (2:1). I would like to go to a much lower gear ratio in the future though. I'm thinking I'll just keep an eye out for a Th350 and a toyota pickup t-case. I can add the 4.7:1 gears to the toyota pickup t-case and the entire unit is about 2" shorter than what i have now.
Considering the driveline angle, I don't have room for a 203 unit
:( so my option is to live w/ the gearing or find the toy unit I mentioned above.
Cheyenne 03-27-2002, 11:20 AM I had to give you a nice new welcome Ang. And it sounds like you understand the Jeep thing pretty well, its not for everyone.
Yeah Wheelinjp I understand the jeep thing very well!
Don't own one:D
Land Crusher 03-27-2002, 04:58 PM I asked peopple about the toy truck
transfer case and I heard it was not strong enugh?
but ther was some one who used part of the toy
truck case in front of ther cruzer case.
I have kept a truck case sitting around so
that I could take it apart and look at
how it could be used.
Tankota 03-28-2002, 12:17 PM Update on the progress:
Got the frame (tube) crossmember converted to a bolt-in installation (if it was welded in the transfer case could never be removed) and put it in with the "hump" down instead of up like the stock location.
Got the tranny and t-case crossmember fabricated and bolted in.
Fabricated the t-case 2-bolt side mount.
Cheyenne helped me with alot of grinding, drilling, cutting and painting last night so we got quite a bit done.:)
Landcrusher, from everything I heard was that the toy truck t-case was much stronger than a cruiser t-case (still not as strong as an NP205 though). I have seen alot of cruiser t-cases shattered but haven't seen any toy ones yet. Anyway, I've got a 205 which likely won't break...however the stock adapter was broken and rewelded on the setup that I got. I'm guessing the 2 hole side mount for the t-case was not used in conjunction with the 2 hole bottom mount which goes on the adapter.
D_Samurized 03-28-2002, 12:55 PM Hey,
This is to Tankota. I live in lacey/oly area and i'm really interested in seeing your rig. have you ever heard of DeezKnutz Offroad around town? anywho i'm with them and i'd love to check out your rig, always cool findin different wheelers in the area, anyway if you feel comfortable give me a call on my cell 507-4671. hope to hear from ya.
Tankota 03-28-2002, 03:34 PM I'll give you a call in the next few days. Right now I'm too busy working on the cruiser to do anything else. I hadn't heard of the off road shop you mentioned, in fact I didn't even know an offroad shop existed in the south sound. Talk to you later.
Tankota 04-05-2002, 01:14 PM Actually I posted under Tankota by accident:D
DCruiser138 04-05-2002, 01:23 PM wtf is goin awn?! theres like tankota talkin to himself or sumthin:rasta:
Cheyenne 04-05-2002, 01:41 PM Tank when do you think we will have the cruiser completed and out on the trails?:D
Tankota 04-24-2002, 12:20 PM Should have the cruiser ready for light trails this weekend. I still need a longer slip yoke for the front driveline but will use a limiting strap:( on the front end for this trip.
Everything is finally coming together. I just need to kill the death wobble. and do a few other minor things.
Found a big truck wrecking yard that has the long slip yokes for $60:) . Unfortunately my driveline guy is moving his shop and won't be available for a month:( .
As for getting it in and out of the garage...:p I have to air down the tires so much they almost fold over on themselves when I ease into the garage. My rims are about 4 inches off the ground when I do this.

If you pull it in forward you should be able to get away with just airing down the rear tires...works for me and the 42's and I have a standard height garage.

Wow! I had no idea you actually fit your cruiser inside a standard garage anymore:eek:
Thanks for the tip. This is how I used to be able to fit it in the garage when I had 35s. I have a 2" body lift and 7 leaf waggies so it is pretty tall.
500 HORS 04-24-2002, 11:31 PM to get in and out of the garage just wratchet strap the axles to the frame to collapse the springs, or pyle the Waltons in b4 movin it
