Snorkel Question?

I'm wanting to set up a snorkel on my 4.3 chevy Sammy. What I am looking for are some pics of home made ones that look really cool and how to make one. Or is there a place I can buy a no shit Snorkel that has been pre molded. Thanks for your help.

Snorkle is the least of your worries in water, how do you keep the Ignition system dry? Snorkles look cool though.

Why would you want a snorkle? they look like s#@t, get caught on trees, look like s@#t, don't work. And who will build a snrkle for a Sammy with a 4.3? Sounds like your into cheezy!!!!!!!! I would sooner spend it on something usefull, like water proof seat covers.

Maybe it's par for the course in his area.I know I do alot of water fording up here and I would gladly dry out a distibutor rather than rebuild an engine.Besides that you can still crank over a dry engine in case you stall in deep water.Lets face it we have all mis judged a water hole before and it is cheap insurance.Check with a plumbing store and see what they have to offer.Sometimes they have some neat stuff.

Don't bother with it. If your into water that deep, you don't have enough power in the stock motor to do any damage. We have hydro locked lots of Zuks and have not done any danage. ABS only gets hung up on trees, and doesn't fare well in a roll over. But then I guess you never plan on rolling it over, but then who does.

Large bank accounts? don't think so. I built my truck up on a small budget over several years. I have sold old stuff to buy new. as far as lift goes, I think mine on 38's is smaller than alot on 33's. Dog all you want.

As far as steering, it is Saginaw from a YJ, plus hydrolic assist ( home made) .

P.S. I havn't seen one snorkle that looks good, and frankly think there is no need for them. Its a gimick is all.

Havn't got around to the Hydrolic write up. Been enjoying wheeling too much. Every weekend this month. But will have something this winter. I had a Sidekick box before. It wore out, and bad power steering is worse than no power steering.

Hardtop, soft top, who cares, they are "poser" add-ons. Show me pictures of people actually requiring a snorkle on a trail. That doesn't mean The " Tank Trap".

How deep do people want to go? I think the stock air box works extreamly well. Water has to travel a bit to get to the engine. I we are talking 24" - 36" the stock box will take a bow wake over the hood. If we are talking about 42" or deeper , forget it. even the snorkle won't help you. how do you deal with back pressure, weight of water in the truck, electrical systems like ignition wires, floatation, traction, diff and tranny hoses, and gas filler. My question is why do you need one? Is it for looks, or are you going in that deep of water? <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0">

mudlite tell us how you feel about snorkels geez.

I have one on mine and have had it for about 7 years now. It has proven to be a cheap insurance on numerous occasions. I have crossed rivers that have had water flowing through the windows and it didn't miss a beat or suck in any water. Ignition is easily waterproofed on my 5k engine. The spark boots are great at keeping moisture out and add a bit of marine grease around the dissy and plug ends hadn't had any problems.

I also have done a lot of driving in very dusty conditions and the raised intake with the ram turned backwards ensures a nice clean source of air. On those nice cool nights when the air is just right the snorkel adds a lot of noticable power.

My snorkle is made out of 3" steel tube and has acted as a windshield protector as well. All in all a great little inestment.

that is just after the water through the door incident. The bonnet/hood is off due to the 120? weather and a stuffed thermostat. The car ran no probs

I have been in water crossing when all I could see was green light filtered throught wave, and water was coming in the top of the door seal. Of course, that was my diesel Cherokee.

I dunno John, I think even if you don't need them, they are a good cool-air intake. I have had a couple close calls, and the snorkel on the VW diesel makes me feel warm and fuzzy as I go in. I have dropped the front end into holes that tipped me in deep enough to take out the even the normal, good zuk intake - luckily I was tipped to the driver's side though.

FWIW, I have 3" cheap sewer pipe for mine, and if it busts on a branch, I can fix it with the black cement as long as I can find the pieces, and replace it all for 10 bucks at Home Depot. The seal the to the airbox is a roof vent seal. I used vacuum line to strap it to the windshield frame, it gives to impact really well, and none of the joints a glued - the fit is tight enough to stay together, but still allow adjustments.

In situations such as this (http://www.projecttwin.com/images/tracker/4-26-03/DSC00169.JPG) it's nice to know that you're not going to stick the intake under water. I've been in situations where we've done exactly what you see in that pic, only the water is much deeper. All it takes is for the hole to be deeper than you think and you're screwed.

My reason for getting the snorkel is the fact that on the Track/Kicks, there's a plastic intake runner that runs through the fender well and pulls air from just behind the driver's side headlight and turn signal. Drop into a water hole and the first thing underwater is your headlights.

Call me crazy, but I like the added insurance of a snorkel.

I haven't needed anymore than the stock intake. I have been in over the hood, but only momentarily.

A snorkel is just something else to get ripped off of mine. I have a hard enough time keeping flares on (it's the law).

A few guys a run with have had them, and took them off.

Seen one that ran into the cab thru the firewall and then up the inside of the windshield frame finally opening right above the passengers head, noisy but never got rubbed off.

Here is a pic of mine. It's a 1991 and I was able to attach the 2" black PVC directly to the stock airbox using a $3 rubber coupling. Total cost was less than $10, and I just used vire to attach it to a few spots along the sides and hold it tight. It's been whacked by trees plenty of times and held up reasonably well.

I put a 90* piece up top that's loose, on trails it faces back, on the road I can turn in forward for a ram-air effect.

heres mine but you will need bigger tube even with the stock carb it chokes it down if you rev it over 5000 rpm mileage goes to s#!t it is made of 2-1/2 i also tried it on a weber through the stock air box and it would barely rev.i am not running it now but i carry it with so i can bolt it up if i want to cross or play in some water as for the dist i have a vw baja boot on it to keep the water out it works good it's made by bug pack products and it's for a type 1 009 dist which means it doesnt have a vac advance so you have to make a slit for it in the boot and reassemble the dist
all of these are a little insurance for HELPING to keep out h20 nothing will gurantee your motor will be safe but for a short 10-15 second blast through something without sustained soaking every little bit helps... just dont fill in the little hole in the bottom corner of the stock air box that little hole lets water out when you are driving in the rain(trust me)

I found a good shot of my snorkel - 4 inch pipe, actually, no flow issues at all :D
It would feed a 7.3 Powerstroke I would think.
I have a drip tube from a 6.9 Ford air cleaner housing - dip it in water, and the end closes up - water can get out, can't get in. The VW diesel is sealed tight, and all the vents arre up high - eventually I will tie them all into the snorkel.

Anyway, mine are a home built set by a guy in Maine. They need some more engineering. They bend. Too much offset, not enough beef or support. But they didn't cost 20 grand, either.
