: newb needs axels
that hurt 12-21-2005, 06:19 PM I just started the teardown on my '55 Willys. I was hoping to keep the stock axels for a while, untill I get some more money for some nicer axels. But when I was trying to take the wheels off, the stud broke off. So now I'm in the market for some new axels, instead of dealing with the whole rusted mess and worrying about breaking on the trail. I want soe axels that are are easy to get parts for, are inexpensive, and won't break often. What kind should I get? Post pics of what they look like or how to id them becaust i'll be searching the junkyard soon.
Krazy Krakker 12-21-2005, 06:41 PM What side is the front diff on? pass. or driver? What type of wheeling are you going to do and how big of tire are you going to be using?
that hurt 12-21-2005, 06:55 PM pass. side drop. I want to put 35"s on, but mabey upgrade down the road to 38"s. I like to go as fast as I can thru rocks and mud, but I will also be driving it on the road, it won't be a tralier queen.
ogreshooter 12-21-2005, 06:57 PM Yeah, some more pertinent info would be:
What motor and how much poop?
What tranny?
Tire size?
Wheel base?
What kind of wheeling do you ever want to do. Think of as gnarly as you might ever want to do, then compromise from there.
How much $$$ are you willing to drop?
Do you want used or brand new Curry's axles?
You doing this yourself? And can you weld?
Just a few points that might be able to help us help you. We will be more than willing to help, but need some more info about you.
Oh, and are you the gentle wheeler that uses finese? Or "that" guy on the trail that has more HP than brains, aka, if it doesn't go, give it more juice?
ogreshooter 12-21-2005, 06:58 PM Sorry, you got in before me. If you like going through rocks fast, be prepared to break stuff. Sounds like duece and a halfs are in your future...
that hurt 12-21-2005, 10:41 PM stock 3spd manual that might need to be replaced, i haven't really checked it out yet. has a 289 ford in questionable condition, but it runs. i'm gonna do some welding, not the important stuff, mostly body crap and filling holes/cracks.
butch6924 12-22-2005, 06:35 AM For axles I'd try to track down a set of EB axles. 44 front with a 9" rear. Tons of upgrade options for both so they can grow with your budget. Hard part is just finding them.
Another options would be a matched set out of a Waggy. D44's front & rear but I wouldn't be too confident about running 38's on a 44 rear.
Magnum_Willys 12-22-2005, 07:51 AM Front: D44 Wagoneer Front Housing & Axles with 3/4 Ton Chevy Spindles & hub, or Dodge D60 narrow long side 2.5"
Rear: Chevy PU 14 Bolt or D70 from 80's E-350, both 67" WMW-WMS
turdles 12-22-2005, 08:05 AM Dana 44 front, upgrade to alloy shafts when you go to 38s, and a ford 9" rear would be the easiest/cheapest to find.
72fj40 12-22-2005, 08:38 AM If your hoping to keep the stock axles for a while, why don't just replace the
studs?

i'd break the shafts anyway and would eventually upgrade. I figure it would probably cost more.
