Anyone here do it? http://yarchive.net/metal/friction_cutting.html

I have a friend here who routinely does it, I haven't paid to much attention to it though, but I know he uses a vertical wood bandsaw.

I'm going to have to go pick his brain some more and try it out.

yes we do it occasionally. We have a couple of trashed blades that we use to do it. Works fine just gets hot after awhile.

Using wood blades in a jig saw or recip saw also works. But it throws sparks everywhere, creates a big mess, and you run the chance of ruining a good tool. IMO, you also cannot cut the thicker steels with any degree of accuracy.

I have used it to cut stainless on a big DoAll verticle bandsaw. Cuts like butter. I would not think most saws could spin fast enough to do it though.

Technically, your friction-cutting any time you grab your chopsaw, too. :p

friction sawing stainless steel works- own a 30" doall verticle saw and at 4000 s.f.p. you can cut 1/8" stainless like a hot knife thru butter. i keep a blade around the shop for this type of work. make sure you wear earmuffs to protect your hearing.
