: AW4 rebuild tips?

I have an AW4 out of a 91 XJ that is acting really strange - I was getting a really bad vibe at 30 - 40 mph and stumbling accelleration in overdrive but not in 3rd, after calling it quits on the road test I came home and tried reversing in the driveway and the tranny stalls the motor in reverse. I pulled the fuse for the TCU and reverse works but creates a "hard part failure" clanking noise(only present in reverse). As I was getting the jeep turned around to park it and drop the tranny it was trying to stall in manual reverse mode as well. I pulled the t-case and tranny to find that 4 of the 6 bellhousing bolts were missing (confirming my suspicions of motion between the block and tranny) Everything electrical looks good and I have yet to tear into the tranny. Any takers on the cause of the issue? Or just any rebuild tips in general; I am going to do it myself cause I'm cheap so the "take it to a good shop" answer is out! Is there a good way to test the torque converter or just replace it as it is likely damaged from all the slop? TIA

I am interested as well. The tranny shop wants $1800 to rebuild a AW4. I have not found a book yet. but mine is still going strong with 200k miles.
