A little back story

I bought the Jeep with 52000 miles on it. I drove it off the lot and made it about 2 miles before the transmission lost 1,2, and 5th gears. Mr Trasmission had the Jeep off and on for two and a half months because they kept doing crap work.

At 78000 miles I lost 5th gear, no pow, no bang, just went to put it in and nothing. With the help of a friend I tore the tranny apart and found that the c-clip holding 5th gear in place on the rail had broken allowing the gear to slide on the rail eventually getting eaten up. I paid ~$100 for used gears and put them in. It worked fine except for some (a lot) of whining while the Jeep was in neutral with the clutch out and occasionally popping out of 5th with no load on it.

Tonight while driving I was in fifth gear and it all of a sudden dropped out. All other gears work fine and even the whining at neutral has stopped.

What are my choices? If it is the same problem as before or something similar I can take care of it. I can pay the $100 for used gears or I believe the quote for new gears jumped up towards $300. I could get a reman for slightly more. However, I was planning on swapping out the transmission eventually and I have a 23 spline Dana 300 transfer case sitting in the shed that I could put on an adapted transmission.

What do you all suggest for a poor college student with about $1000 MAX to spend?

try to find a New venture out of a newer tj, i think its a 3550. or you could just rebuild it again. the whining sounds like it might be the pilot bearing, but since it stopped when you lost 5th, it sounds like something different. not sure about whats involved in the tj tranny swap, but new venture makes pretty good tranny's, it would be worth looking into.

Best option out there.

Do the AX15 or NV3550 conversion. Since you already have the 23 spline TC you are half way there.

I did the swap on my 92' YJ and I am actually buying YJ4Rox's conversion from him to do it on my Dad's YJ.

It is well worth the little bit of money it takes to do the conversion.

So, which tranny did you put in? The AX-15 or the NV3550?

Does anyone know what is involved in the NV3550 swap? And what would be a shorter drivetrain combo with the 231 t-case?

If you keep the AX-5 and still want to run a 300. Advanced Adapters has a AX-5 to Dana 300 adapter. Part number 50-3021. The kit Provides the parts needed to change your Dana 300 from 23 pline input to a 21 spline input. I just ordered it.
