: Gear Ratio??

I am curious on the different gear ratios for my YJ. It has the 6 cylunder and stock axles (yeah I know the suck, being a student blows). I am pushin over 33's right now but hope to eventually go to 35's. Anyway, with 4.10's what kind of performance can I expect? Gas mileage and highway speed mainly. and same question for 4.56. What would you guys run?

4:56 without a doubt.

I ran 4.88's with a XJ with a 4 cyclinder in it and they worked nicely

well, first off, ditch the d35 and d30 if you are getting 35s. get yourself some 44s at least. if you are using an OD tranny (ax15 if i'm not mistaken), get 4.56s (at the very least) or 4.88s - otherwise you'll be driving around in 4th gear at the top. you'll still have decent highway rpms because of that 5th gear.

I plan on replacing the axles as soon as I can afford to. Right now I can barly afford the gears. Alright I think 4.56 will be good. I was just thinkin 4.10 and 4.56. Since this is my DD

you'll be buying two sets of gears and new axles

get the new axles first. deal with whatever gearing they have (you CAN run 35s with 3.07s if you have to). then get new gears. you'll save $600 at the very least in the long run.

if you can barely afford to do it right the first time, can you really afford to do it twice?

I ran 35's and 4:10's for a while. It was ok for onroad driving but definitly want something much lower for wheelin. I now have 5.13's and its ten times better. :D

looking tha the price of axles it will be along time before I have the resources to buy a set of them. I don't want to go to a junkyward and have to rebuild some axles. so I am just going to deal with my axles for a while. And the way I wheel I don't think it will be a huge issue with my 33's. The main thing is that my gas mileage is sucking and I don't want to have to pay so much for gas so often. It is averaging like 1.55 out here per gallon. YUCK!

RYSYJ just pulled a 30/35 combo with 4.10's in em...bet he would make you a good deal on em too. Be a direct swap on complete axles and you could sell your currents or just keep all the crap for spares (you will need em on 35's ;) )

Pick up a set of Wagoneer axles at the boneyard, should be <$600 for the set. Bolt them up.
If you're lucky, you'll find a set with 4.10's

A monkey could rebuild a pair of axles! ;) :flipoff2:

Seriously, it isn't that tough. But I'd agree that it would be much cheaper and better for you to buy a pair of 4.10 axles off somebody like RYSYJ (or whomever) and install those temporarily until you can aford the Ching a Ling to buy a pair of 44s and regear 'em (you can get 'em for less than $600 pretty easily...). Re-gearing a 30-35 combo is just throwing good money after bad, IMNSHO.

I also agree with what others said about 4.56 being about right for a Jeep with a stock 6 and 35s that'll still be seeing some road time. I went with 4.27s and mine was still a little doggy in 5th with a 258. They should be perfect for my 350 though (if I ever finish swapping it in).

Good luck,
Jake

$225 for both front 30 and rear 35 with 410's. Just took them out last night. Front 30 needs new rotors, and tie rod is not the best shape, just use your old stuff. 410's worked well for me on 35's. Let me know soon, Kidwired will install for you if you want.

Hey guys thanks for the help. Ryan I think I am gonna hold off on it for now. because I won't have 35 for at least 6 months or until my 33's wear down.(which are brand new). I plan on just gettin something better this summer when I have some time to work and make money. Anyone need a hired hand in the san jose area?

hell, I'm running 4.10's with my puny little 31" tires. They're great for the wheeling (read: very little) I have been able to find here in Lubbock, TX... but they suck on the street, too low, I'm running almost 2000 RPM at 45mph in 5th gear. I would suggest 4:56's as well, although that set of 4.10 axles sure sounds like a smokin deal.

Get Ryans axles and have kidwired put em on for you or do it yourself. Kid sold me his last set of axles (stock 4.10s) and it was the cheapest way to go for bigger tires. I have the six cylinder and 4.10 is perfect for 33s. I'm running 35s now, but I did put in a d44 rear to be on the safe side. The 44 cost me a bit of change to regear and lock up so if you are a student with limited budget I would definitely go with the d30-35 axle swap. You can also add a lockright rear locker and install it yourself . The install is a piece of cake in the rear. As for gearing,my 87 YJ came stock with 3.07 gears though some came geared lower. While ideally I would go to 4.56 for 35 inch tires , they work fine with the 4.10s. I just don't shift to 5th gear till I'm driving over 60-65 is all. Also putting 35 inch tires on a d35 axle seems risky to me. Haven't tried it but didn't want to lose a wheel either.

I completely understand where you're coming from... I'm currently a broke college student as well... I lucked out and found a set of gears for $75 (used but in great condition) and a guy to put them in (front and rear) for $250. Otherwise I was looking for a set of 4cyl axles...

it's been 25 years since you could get a wagoneer with 4.10s... and those were few and far between. most wags had 3.07s in the 70s i think, 3.55s were the next step up. 4.10s were mostly in the J trucks and some cherokees. i'm not sayin waggies with 4.10s aren't out there, they're just rare.

you'd be far better off trying to find a set of 1/2 ton truck axles with 4.10s. there'd be a higher probability of getting those.

$600 for two dana 44s? what junkyards are you in man? a dana 44 should be $100 max!

if you can get ahold of a 30/35 combo for fairly cheap, go for it; unless you find a better deal
