: Defender 106 Pics
Buckon37s 12-24-2005, 12:39 PM Hi Guys,
I don't have the wifes digital camera right now so I can't get any good detailed pics. When I get back form my trip on the 31st I will snap some more detailed pics for everybody. These are just a few from the build.
The front axle went foreword 2.5in. This was accomplished by taking a piece of solid bar 2in and putting it on a lathe and boring and taping a hole to allow it to be screwed on the old radius arm. The rear of the arm was then tapped for the 1in teflon hiem. This is way overkill, but why not! This made the radius arm a total of 8in longer than stock.
In case your wondering, I only needed to move the front end 1-1.5in foreword to clear the tires, but I was trying to fit some hi-steer rear mounted arms around the oil pan. Well, I measured four times, and still got it wronge. So the arms don't fit and I just had to cut a whole lot more off the front end. I'm not too bummed, because now the front tires are even with the end of the front frame, so the approach ange is very good.
The last pic loaded is what the final fender trimming looks like.
Buckon37s 12-24-2005, 12:51 PM The rear was moved back 10.5 inches. This was really basic. I took the lower links that KC made for me and cut them about a third from the frame end and then sleeved them with Chromo tube. It was then welded up on both ends as well as a few holes along the way. The upper links were a bummer. I wanted to do this on an extreme budget, so we cut as many corners as we could. What we ended up doing is cutting the upper links right in half. We then took them over to the press and squeezed the frame end together and separated the axle end so that they were facing eachother. We then welded in solid bar to recreate and lenthen the upper links. It ended up looking OK. It is more than strong enough, just not all that pretty. I will take more detailed pictures when I can.
Buckon37s 12-24-2005, 12:58 PM As you can see from the above pics, the rear frame was cut off and we welded in 2in chromo tubing. Very simple, only four bends. It saved a ton of weight and the departure angle is awesome. Fom there, we hung the rear with 16in SAW air shocks. The rear is so light that it only takes 350 PSI to get to ride hight. In all the pics the shocks are running really low to fit into the garage. The rear roll cage is tied into the frame by the gas tank and then again ahead of the rear seat and once more into the rear body. This makes the cage a 10 pointer, kinda. The rear is very strong and extremely ridgid. I need to snap much more pics to get all the detail.
Buckon37s 12-24-2005, 01:16 PM So far, I don't know how well it works. I got this finished a few weeks ago, minus the hydro assist. I took it out to the hammers and after about an hour we lost pressure in one of the shocks. I had not had the time to buy a nitrogen tank (have one now) and nobody had one out there so we had to nurse it back to the camp. Turned out I had not tightened the valve stem all the way (yes, I am stupid).
It did well. It took about 3 tries to get the rear shocks mounted in the right location, but the travel is excellent. I might need to add a sway bar to the rear, it is not too tippy, but I have not ran with a full load and people in the back yet.
Oh, here is a pic of my 7 1/2 months pregnant wife doing the heavy lifting!! :D
She is 6'1" tall flat footed so it gives you a good idea of the travel the truck has. It was not even maxed out here.
madcowdungbeetle 12-24-2005, 05:09 PM Looks awesome!
What are you running up travel vs down travel in the rear with the 16" SAW's..
From the looks of yours, I'm gonna be driving a giant slinky with 16" SAW at all 4 corners.

Thanks a lot! I have 6up and 9.5 down (.5 worth of oil bumpstop). This is depending on how much pressure I put in the shocks. Sometimes I run it lower/higher. Just a warning, be sure to make your links as long as possibe in the rear. Even with my links extremely long there is still some rear-steer with that much travel.
revor 12-25-2005, 10:29 AM Classy Fab Dave!
SeaRover 12-25-2005, 12:49 PM that looks great! truck, too :D :D
PTSchram 12-26-2005, 12:59 PM that looks great! truck, too :D :D
X2!
Nice job. Can't wait to see more pics of it, especially the suspension and the pics of the little one when it's born!
Peace,

m016324 12-26-2005, 04:20 PM is that front hiem bolt through the frame? Also how is the double sheer attached for the front mount? Looks interesting. Still not liking that front bumper but hey looks are a personal thing.

Hey Ben,
I hope these pics can help with the questions. The front hiems and connected with 2in solid bar that was threaded to accept the bolt and then welded through the frame. Then 3/8 plate was bent and welded to the top to provide the double sheer. It is overkill, but hey. As to front bumper, I know what you mean, sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. I wanted something light, protective, and over the hood so I could keep the hood intact when I roll. I don't like the stinger bar so this is what I came up with. Surprisingly, with the front fender trimming, it looks really good in the front. Looks more like part of the vehicle. Anyway, here are some pics of the heim.
Buckon37s 01-02-2006, 04:46 PM Here is all the pics of the rear that you wanted. On the upper mounts, I took three pieces of solid bar and welded them together. It is pretty crude, but it worked pretty well. You can see in the second to last pic where the fram turned to tube. The last pic is the inside of the rear. My rear seat bolts to the brackets you see there. It connects the roll cage to the frame and then to the frame again by the rock sliders. Is is very ridgid and light back there. I wish I had more room back there but works pretty well.
Buckon37s 01-02-2006, 04:48 PM Well, not quite Hippi Hydro but Hydro!!!!
Man, I have wanted this for at least two years. It cost more than I was expecting, but I am really glad that I did not try to do it myself. Way over my head.
Buckon37s 01-02-2006, 04:53 PM Here are some more pics of the steering. I had the pump rebuilt to 1450 PSI 3 GPM. This is a little low for what the ram requires but I did not want to over stress the pump. It is a PSC 1.5 8in stroke unit. As to the results, I am thrilled! I took it out yesterday and did some playing. It is not turn-with-your-pinky soft, but it is turn with one hand soft and is like that no matter what the stress is. Even wedged hard, it turns right over. I am going to need wheel spacers for the front in order to get all the turning radius back with the wider tires, but other than that, it is exactly what I wanted.
Oh, the tie rod is 1 3/8in 3/8in wall chromolly with 1in hiems below, 3/4 up top.
Buckon37s 01-02-2006, 05:03 PM Here are some misc pics that you guys might be interested in. One of the rear shock mounts, one is of the final front fender trimming. It matches the line of the front bars better now. One is of the approach angle, not sure what it is but it is very good. The rear is over 90 degrees. And one pic of the lexan floor panel. Totally cheese ball I know, but my fire wall was rusted through, so I cut it out in order to weld in a new piece and got this idea. It ended up working well. I can see the inside of my drivers side tire really well and the passenger can see my diff perfectly.
Anyway, I'll stop bloviating. I am just frekin thrilled to be done with it finally. Now all I have to do is spend money on it when it breaks!!
PTSchram 01-03-2006, 05:50 AM Thanx for the pics, especially the ones of the heim jointed radius arms.
Now that I look at the pics, I see the radius arms are upside down (???). Why?

No reason really. Only benefit is clearance under the axle.
greasypete 07-30-2009, 02:49 PM Hi,
I am new to the board. I dont own a real offroader and I am more into RCīs. The reason for me to post up here is, that I did a scale version of this beautifull rig, in 1:10 and with RC full driveable. I am still not finished yet, but I wanted to share these pictures with you, because this original car was my inspiration for this built. Thanks and I hope you dont mind posting it here.
I have brazed the complet cage out of steel-tubes and powdercoated it black. I did some changes to the the tube layout, but it still looks like your original car.
Have fun with the pictures.
Best regards, Peter

You are a talented guy. That looks 10 times better than the original. Really nicely done.
Grimace 07-30-2009, 07:24 PM That is freakin c00l!
To have someone scale your car into an RC, and then pimp your thread with it is beyond imagination.
Orsum work on the RC Pete, and sweet job with the 106 Buch!
PTSchram 08-01-2009, 07:42 AM Now that is true flattery!
Nice job on both.

greasypete 08-01-2009, 03:32 PM Thanks for all the kind words !
I have one question to Dave (I hope thats your name):
Does this rig still exist or did you chopped the cage of and used this rig as a basis for your newer defender ? Is the new one the same car ?
Do you have any pictures of the softtop on it, or was that just an idea ?
Thanks again,
Peter
Devil Dog 08-01-2009, 09:16 PM if i would have seen this earlier.. i would have lit the damn thing on fire today dave.... :flipoff2:

Hi Peter,
The rig as you built it is gone. I destroyed it to do this:
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd299/buckon35s/Bender%20Jambo/IMG_2297.jpg
Even that has changed now. New sliders and sway bar. I really like what you did. It is masterfull! I am serious when I say that I want it if you decide to sell it. Thanks for the props and I hope you have a lot of fun with it!
Oh, and no I never did a soft top. Things keep moving on!
greasypete 08-02-2009, 11:33 PM Thanks for the picture, Dave ! Looks awesome too !
Whenever I plan to sell this rig, I will call you first !
XtremeMarine 08-03-2009, 07:00 AM That is amazing Pete. You're going to have to build a second one for Dave, so he can run it in the pits when his is on the trailer. That's some exceptionally talented work, for 1:10 scale. Nice job. The Buck will live forever!
landybehr 08-04-2009, 12:56 PM Oh, here is a pic of my 7 1/2 months pregnant wife DOING the heavy lifting!! :D.

Seriously though, very cool.
BTW, you drive that thing better than a lot of guys I saw at the Natl Rally.

I was at the Shipshewana flea market a few weeks ago and was amazed at all of the R/C Land Rovers that were available there. A cool LR3, and L322/RRS were some of the more visible.

XtremeMarine 08-11-2009, 01:28 PM Now I want one too, lol.
DanielK 08-16-2009, 04:15 AM PTSchram, you should pick up a few of em and ebay em. they go for some good money...
motomatt68 08-16-2009, 11:12 AM It even got hung up on the radius arm tabs at about 2:00. That is attention to detail. I wonder how he reinforced the frame.
greasypete 08-17-2009, 01:19 PM Thanks for all the kind words from you here. I am still dreaming of a real offroader, but here in germany all areas are restricted by law and we do not have much places to go real offroading. How sad this is.
I must visit the US one day and rent a wrangler in Moab ...
Anyway,
I just found the right tires for my rig, that look like an exact replica of the 1:1 tires. Anybody know what brand and name these tires on the real-one are ?
