: Replacing a computer on a YJ ???'s
massey2jeep 03-26-2002, 08:46 AM I think I'm gonna be replacing the computer on my YJ. Anyone ever done this before? Does the entire unit need to be replaced or can only certain parts be replaced to obtain different results? Understand? I guess I am asking if it is a "ALL or NONE" type of unit. I think it is the unit behind my washer fluid holder(why I still have this in there I will never know).
Thanks for any advice or if you have a computer, lemeknow.
Thanks,
:massey:
Keith Strong 03-26-2002, 09:13 AM Step 1. Unscrew little screw.
Step 2. Unplug two wiring harnesses
Step 3. Remove computer
Step 4. Reverse steps 1-3 with new computer
:flipoff2: I believe it is one unit bradda ;)
bigdude 03-26-2002, 09:13 AM To the best of my knowledge it's all or nothing.
And it is where you think it is.
Steve N 03-26-2002, 11:06 AM You guys are smoking crack. :flipoff2: The computer's behind the glove box. If you have A/C it's a bitch. Kevin, do you need the ignition module or a 'puter? I just pulled the one out of my '88 YJ I think it's broken. I have a nice california one. I need a 49 state one. What's up with your Sh*t is the carb not working, or the ignition? Trying to smog it?
Keith Strong 03-26-2002, 11:11 AM I am pretty damn sure when I replaced mine back in 98 is was behind the water tank  Then again, it may not have crack but I was smokin somethin :p
massey2jeep 03-26-2002, 11:28 AM Thank you my merry band of Jackasses! :flipoff2:
I just got back from J&W. I tried everywhere else first. Oh well. Got a good deal on a used one. $185. They wanted $489 or something stupid formt he dealer.
It'll only be half of $185 anyway, caus ethe BUYER for my rig is paying the other 1/2. YEEEE HAWWW. Pretty soon you boys will have to call me MasseyNOjeep. lol :(
I am excited about callin my creditors and tellin them I have cash if they want to settle!:D WOO HOOO!!!
What I had in mind for replacement is the unit mounted on the firewall. I thought this was the computer? hmmm.
Keith-
Have you given much thought to writing for Chiltons? bahahaha
Thanks fellas. I hope I got the right part! I think so tho.:)
:massey:
massey2jeep 03-26-2002, 11:44 AM This just in, I got off the phone with my mechanic. Wayne at ROCKLIN FOREIGN AUTO(yes he's a Jeeper), he said it was located under the master cylinder on the Firewall.Time to go swap her out!

He who lives in a glass house should not throw stones! :flipoff2:
Sorry Steve but YOU are the one with the bad crack.:D On 91 and newer YJ's the computer is on the driver side on the firewall. Behind the washer fluid tank.
Massey:
J&W would have asked for the 3 digit number off of your computer. There is a bunch of numbers BUT there are 3 that are in the middle and larger than the rest. That is how to identify the computer.
Keith Strong 03-26-2002, 12:24 PM Massey.....:flipoff2:
Steve N......:flipoff2:
Rockslut......nice sig ;) :flipoff2:
massey2jeep 03-26-2002, 01:15 PM Alright, let see what it's not,
It's not the computer.
That would be $185 out the window.
It's not the coil.
That would be another $36 I just spent.
Now, I'm gonna try to replace the distributer. I know they don't usually go out, but this ain't usual.
Any other idea why there would be no spark from the coil to dist?
Thansk Matt. Fellow on crack smoker. It's Crank ONLY for us!
Keith Strong 03-26-2002, 01:38 PM Real addicts snort and shoot...smoking is for rookies :flipoff2:
Are you sure its no spark? Not being a smartass...just curious what has occured so far to diagnose?
The Rockslut 03-26-2002, 01:56 PM ROOKIE MOVE, ITS THE CPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will bet you the CPS (Crank Positioning Sensor) is done.
Dude, why didnt you call? Knuckle head. Well at least the new buyer has a spare computer and coil. :flipoff2:

Well, that has been replaced as well. My bad for not mentioning it.
Keith- Yea no spark AT ALL. A mechanic that lives across the street suggested MAYBE the dist. He's gettin it for me at wholesale. Can't beat that.
I'll keep you clowns informed.
Time to go pick up my dist.

Do we need to send in a recovery crew?
Man, if I would have known that you were gonna replace almost everything under the hood before you sold that thing I would have bought it! :flipoff2:
Boston Mangler 03-26-2002, 02:19 PM What year is the YJ and what motor is in it??
If it is after 91 it should have that little nifty ODBII plug and you can get the scanner from Autozone for under $100 and stop playing the guessing game!
I learned this the hard way (and $600 later)

He has a 91 4.0 5spd.
It is either the CPS or the pickup in the distributor.
We shall find out when he gets back.
Boston Mangler 03-26-2002, 02:59 PM Ok cool
Best of luck to him
Just an FYI, the Scanner for the 91 4L is under $100 at autozone and you can pull all the codes with it that the dealer does! Very cool tool for EFI rigs!!

You can also cycle the key 3 times and count how many times the check engine light flashes. It will flash any errors codes for free :D
Boston Mangler 03-26-2002, 03:06 PM Dumb Question Then
Why wasnt that tried? :D

Yea, what's it in Morris Code? Well I left my decoder ring at the old house. so FU! lol
Ya can't be sure, but I have the strangest feeling we may be over simplifying what the decoder would have said. Probably like "check ignition" or some bullshizit! then I'd be out an additional Hunski!
Besides when you're Big Facin like I am these days. Who cares about dinero right!?!/ lol
IT LIVES!!!
It appears to have been the pick up in the distributer. Yippe Kei Yei Yea Mo Fo!WAZZZUP UUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So who needs a coil or brain? Well I can think of a couple of you that need a brain, but that's beside the point.
Thanks a lot for all the help.
Kevin
