Why are you worried about this? Shouldn't you be working on your 1/4 ellip so we can learn from your mistakes, er....learn from your experiences?

I extended my frame rails by 1" and mounted a 3"x4"x1/4" box tube bumper to the end for a previous suspensin setup. I ended up sinking my 8274 between the frame rails and into the bumper. I macihined out the openings for the cable and I welded a 1/4" thick plate behind the bumper to use as my mount. I think the 3"x4" bumper is a little too big for the front, but I did not want to hang my spring hangers off the front of the bumper. Oh well. I wish I would have used 2"x4" box tube instead.

This is a Specter replacement heavy duty bumper, cut even with the mounting brackets. So it is like a 4" channel of 1/4 steel. All the mounting holes are drilled out to 1/2". Anyway I took a piece of 1/4" plate and cut it to mount the winch to it, using a hole saw to make the corner openings for the cable, then connected them with a sawzall. Did the same for the bumper where the fairlead is. Much cleaner than my torch skills. I welded the nuts for the fairlead inside the bumper cavity before adding the mounting plate, for easier removal and replacement.

The bumper was gussetted inside where the plate would be welded to it. Then the plate was welded to the bumper. Not unlike the con fer winch bumper, just heavier. The plate has a decal on it in the pic.

I should have raised the whole works up so the fairlead is above the bumper and set back. It gets beat up pretty bad. You might be able to see the bolts and nuts replacing the stock pins and circlips on the outer rollers. I could snap a few close ups if that would help.

I have a Can-ferr front bumper that is made for the 8274. I just sold the winch now the bumper is up for grabs. It is near new. It sounds like you want more than that but I thought that I would mention it.

Here's how I mounted it on an FJ55 with a Butch-Built (http://www.butchbuilt.com) front bumper.

CCOT bought out all the old Con Fer stuff for FJ's they could get their hands on and now they are making thier own version of the 8274 c-channel bumper. They are doing a shorty model too.

It will be like $75 bucks ans is super stout....saw one the other day when I was browsing around

Responding to this post from today, doing my best to keep things neat and tidy...

8274 mounting idea's

Got a 8274 on the front of your cruiser... post a pic, looking for some idea's.

Good news: Finally got a 8274
Bad news: When the hell will I have time & place to MAKE something?

Looking for idea's on the mounting that sucker and to get to work with it.

(Also thinking of mounting up a 2" rcvr hitch so I can mount it on the back of the Crew Cab... ya, time to pull more friggin' cedar trees... and raise walls in the few months)

Anyone who recently bought a 8274... did it come with a mounting plate? Oddly enough there was PART of a mounting kit for a J**p in with my 8274. Double the frame adapters (two sets of right and left frame mounts), but NO mounting plate for the 8274. Odd, really odd, as I didn't expect a mounting kit with it... but am wondering if it was misboxed?

Tom

Thanks! All credit to Lance though, he took my vague ideas and his knowledge of where the bumper would be banged into rocks (Tellico mostly) and built an extremely solid, very economical bumper for me. Easy to get the 8274 in there too. Very happy customer.

do you think it affected the vehicle muc, with the winch being mounted so high?

i tried to keep mine low (COG) so it starts two inches below the bottom of the frame

You mean there being a relatively heavy objected mounted above the level of the frame? Nope, haven't popped a wheelie yet! ;)

a"wheelie" i meant on sidehills and general roll centre

but i guess with all that iron and glass above the frame anyways (55) it would hardly makea difference? :D

Spotted the one on CCOT web site (http://http://store.yahoo.com/coolfj40/bumfronchanh.html)
$175 for the sale price, but would want to take a look at it first. I have a pretty large steering box off a Caddy up front, but seems like the 8274 would clear.

I know, I would rather BUILD something than buy it... but not having the shop built puts a damper into any fab work! :)

Naw. I'm disapointed. Morgan didn't say what percentage it was full. I'd like to know if it's kicked, half full, 3/4, 7/8, 15/16, 31/32 etc

So after seeing all the pig-mounted 8274s can I safely assume its enough power to yank my 60 outta trouble?

I'm trying to decide what winch to design my new front bumper for, and want find something that won't be overwhelmed by my fat a$$ truck. :D

Is a Warn 9500 a comparable option?

Eskimo
11-29-2002, 06:19 PM
I've seen more than a few 8274's on full-sizes.

IMO, the only people who will say go 9500 over 8274 are those who have never used a 8274... They last forever, and pull, pull, pull.
