: 4.6l D2 oil consumption Qs
broncolou 12-28-2005, 03:12 PM I have (my wifes) a 03' dII that has used 2+ qrts of oil for the past 2 oil changes. They have been 3k intervals w/ Quaker State 10-40 blend. The truck has 48k miles on it and the tailpipe is a little sooty.
I have heard these trucks have head gasket troubles. Is it common for them to consume oil w/ no other symtoms? I am going to pursue the head gasket angle at my dealer. Is it common for the tailpipes to have a good bit of soot in them? It is almost as sooty as my 3cyl Kubota tractors pipe.
I know these trucks arent known for thier reliability but it works out pretty well for our local club runs and my wife loves it. It is growing on me but I could easily get rid of it if it will become a hassle.:(
Head gaskets won't usually cause oil consumption problems on a pushrod engine(oil arrives to the rockers via the pushrods themselves)
I'd check into the PCV system,I haven't had any issues with D2 pcv's with my customers, but disco 1's had a lame system, hoses go soft quickly.
Me no likey 10w40,prefer 10w30 or 5w30,I don't buy it that thicker oil reduces comsumption on a sound engine.

Rover rockers are lubricated through the rocker shaft. The pushrods on Rover engines are solid.
There are numerous routes from the oil passages to both coolant and the outside world-but unlikely to occur in a relatively new engine that otherwise appears to run well.
I don't really care what the viscosity is as long as it is changed at a reasonable interval. I have achieved very high mileage in my Rover using CB oil, but changing it often. Maybe someday I'll get the engine out and see just what kinda shape it's in:flipoff2:
Peace,

broncolou 12-28-2005, 06:55 PM Any thoughts on the soot in the tailpipe? Definately more than ussual, more than my comp rig and more than all my baily drivers.:(
NVRover 12-28-2005, 07:18 PM How much soot is on the tail pipe? Just around the tip? If so that is common among all rovers, if I remember correctly. I have two Discos (96 & 02) and both have soot around the tip of the tail pipe. I used to have a 97 RR 4.6 and it had soot around the tip too. Should be normal.
broncolou 12-28-2005, 08:58 PM There is powdery soot all around the inside of the pipe. Not oily , but it does evenly coat everything.
NVRover 12-29-2005, 08:24 PM Sounds normal to me, at least that is my experience with the Rovers I own and have owned.
pendy 12-29-2005, 11:49 PM How much oil is leaking from the oil pan, rear main seal or valve cover gaskets? That is most likely the real problem.

brdelab 12-30-2005, 10:41 AM Also, sometimes the valve cover gaskets aren't installed correctly which will lead to leaks. Check to make sure that you have no leaks towards the back of the valve covers.
Jtisdale 12-30-2005, 12:29 PM I've heard nothing but bad things about Quaker State, and that was from a dealership service dept employee.
broncolou 12-30-2005, 01:43 PM There is a little seepage from the timing cover or somwhere there abouts. Not nearly enough to be 2+ quarts in 3ooo miles. Doesnt puddle or run, just enough to attract dust.
I thank you all for your input.
Anyone have a preference on oil?

Pugsly 12-31-2005, 02:59 PM Weird, I've just had exactly the same issue with my '01 P38. Oil light came on (at low rpms) in the middle of nowhere on Christmas Day and had to drive for 100 miles to Utah and the interstate to find a gas station that was open. Took 3 quarts of oil, strangest thing. No visible leaks, etc.
