I am looking for a locker for my 1972 fj40. I am very interested in the Detroit Electrac. Can anyone tell me if it is available for my rig? If not, other than ARB, what other "unlockable" lockers will fit? Thank you in advance, Matt

how much work do you wanna do??

as far as i know, the ARB is the only selectable locker for the cruisers..

however, the 80 series had an electric locker, if you can swap out axles, you'd have one more option, its an expensive option, but it's atleast an option

There are actually 3 options (well 2 really as the Toyota lockers are practically the same ;)) for selectable lockers in an FJ40...

1. ARB
2. OEM Toyota E-Locker
3. OEM Toyota Cabel Locker

However, 2 & 3 will ONLY work with a Full-Float Toyota rear axle, and will require a special axle shaft front and rear, really starts to add up $$$, making the ARB look :smokin:

There were some other non-US oddball products that have come & gone, one being the Macnamara, not sure if it is still made or supported here in the US. I can't see a plausible reason to run on here in the US where spare parts and tech service are miles away...

I don't know if there is an application for a GM 12 bolt.
But rumor has it that GM 12 bolt stuff can be modified to work in a 'Cruiser housing.

That said, the money you'd spend modifying the 12 bolt, and a cruiser diff cover for use with the electrac, you'd have spent the money for an ARB (or more) and voided the warranty on the electrac.

I've driven a Lock Righted FJ40 in Salt Lake City every day for 3 years now, and I have not seen any problems with the lock right, or with any of the 'bad weather' characteristics that many people talk about.

Honestly, I'd say put a lock right or an aussie locker in the rear, and IF you need it put an ARB in the front.

That's my 2 cents.
And I am sticking to it.
:D

Thank you to all who posted a reply. I guess ARB will be the way I go. I really was hoping that the Detroit Electrac would be avialable for the FJ40. I don't want to go with a full locker so I don't have to deal with the crunch, slap etc. while cornering.

I'd just weld it - works well for me and you know how it's gonna handle all the time.

Matt,
Does it have to be un-lockable?
Aussie lockers work great on and off-road...do a search for more info.
It will take you longer to read the instructions then to actually install it...

Once you figure out that they don't like going back and forth between acceleration and deceleration around turns, you will be able to adjust your driving style and avoid all that skeery noise and unpleasant stuff.
