I was looking at the POR article on building an OBW. However, it states that you need a Ford externally regulated alternator. Has anyone used this article as a basis for building their own OBW, and if so, what alternator did you use?

Thanks

You could use an 88 Lincoln Mark VII, they have the large housing, are 90 amps minimum, and an externaly regulated. They have 130 and 140 amp Bosch units available for that applications also.
I am thinking of hooking up a 2nd alternator where my smog pump used to mount, and use it just for welding. I am trying to figure out a way to put the second aternator on a magnetic clutch that could be energized when needed for welding(sorta like a compressor clutch).

why? i would thing as long as you give it no charge you are only overcoming the resistance of the bearings, even if you put a clutch there i dont see it having significantly less resistance while unloaded.
also i would think the clutch would increase the diameter of the pulley to the point you would be difficult to get the RPM where you want it. i may be totally wrong though, help me out.

Yup, no need for a clutch, just put the smallest pulley you can on it, and make the supply line switchable.

Hmmm...new project. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Check out my site for some info: members.home.net/t.molnar (http://members.home.net/t.molnar)
I used a 140A GM from a Camaro but others will may work better for you. You can disable the regulator easily if it's an internal one. The more important thing is that the rectifier on the alternator to be rated at least 150 Volts at max amperage! The more modern engine computer controlled alternators have a "fail-safe" 30V max rectifier that is useless for welding. The site that is mentioned on my site www.transpo-usa.com (http://www.transpo-usa.com) is a good source for specs on the internal components of all alternators.
