: Steering Box Adjustment?

I own a 1988 Chevy Suburban 4X4 with 170,000+ miles on it. It seems to have the "wanders" - not bad but some play in the steering - most noticed going down the road. I have checked the tie rod ends, drag link and pitman and all seem tight. King pins are also good and tight. I have replace the steering stabilizer shock. Still have play and am thinking that it exists in the box itself. Is there any way to adjust the box to tighten it up - outside of replacing gears or the whole box itself? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

don't think there is an adjustment to fix that exact problem. replace box

On all saginaw steering boxes: On top of the box - in the middle of the 4 bolt cap - is a bolt with a hex hole in the middle and a locknut on it. Loosen the nut, turn the hex bolt in until the slop disappears, ( like a turn or so ) then tighten hex nut. I check this yearly.

However, you don't want it too tight. It will have some slop when cranked one way or the other, but should be pretty tight when straight ahead. I don't know why this is but it is true. You want to adjust it w/ the wheels straight ahead. If you tighten it up w/ the wheels cranked one way or the other, you could break the box since it will tighten up considerably when straightened out.
